Caulfield plays host to Saturday's edition of free best bets, as the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes highlights a cracking card.

The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with fine weather predicted, participants will be met with a dry racing surface.

The rail is out 8m for the entire circuit and at this set-up, the track generally plays fair.

The last time the rail was in this position, winners came from on and off the speed. At this same meeting last year, the rail was out 9m where we saw very similar results.

Caulfield Race 2 Tip #4 Hi Stranger $2.70

I can't see any reason why we should be jumping off the Hi Stranger bandwagon, as he aims to make it two on the bounce here.

It was a very convincing 1.5 length win over the mile at The Valley last start, sitting midfield and pouncing on No Effort who he squares off with again today.

Although he has to rise up 2kg off that last start victory, he comes here even fitter and the dominance of the last win suggests it won't make a difference.

He maps for a very similar run in the smallish field, sitting in behind the leaders with cover.

Expect him to peel off them in the straight and prove too strong yet again.

With other rivals either coming to the end of their campaign or just beginning, Hi Stranger finds a perfect race to continue on his winning ways at the peak of his prep.

I have him marked as a $2.05 favourite and very happy to bet up at his current quote.

Caulfield Race 5 Tip #3 Ingratiating $4.00

This looks a cracking edition of the Vain Stakes, with some newly turned 3YO's returning for their Spring campaign.

The one that strikes me most is Ingratiating, first-up off the back of two very solid trials in Sydney.

He has been allowed to find his feet in both of them and his work through the line has been exceptionally strong under no pressure.

His 2YO campaign was very good, winning the Listed Talindert before running second in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes and third in the Golden Slipper.

That form, for obvious reasons, reads extremely strong for this race and also against this opposition.

He maps very well, with Generation, Direct, Jigsaw and General Beau all pushing forward to ensure a genuine tempo.

From the wide draw, he will restrain and sit off this hot speed. With his ability to close off strongly late in races, look for him to be finishing over the top of them.

I have him marked as an equal favourite so with the price discrepancy between him and Generation, I'm happy to be backing the Godolphin team.
