The Blue Diamond Stakes is one of the genuine highlights of the Autumn Carnival in Melbourne, as well as Victoria's richest race for two-year-olds.

First run in 1971, it has become one of the most anticipated races of each calendar year, as it provides punters and racing fans with an indication of some of the best young horses going around.

Typically, it is mainly Victorian horses that contest the Blue Diamond. Therefore, it is a race that has a very local feel to it, and in some ways is regarded as the grand final for Melbourne-based two-year-olds. However, the race is also regularly used as a stepping stone into the Golden Slipper in Sydney, which is the country's elite two-year-old race.

Nonetheless, the Blue Diamond is a prestigious race in its own right.

In 2016. the prize purse was upped to 1.5 million dollars.

Some quality horses have claimed the title over the years, including Manikato, Redoute's Choice, Alinghi and Sepoy.

The Blue Diamond Stakes is also a race where punters seem to to always have a good idea where the winner is coming from.

This is reflected in the Starting Price of the previous eight winners, with the longest winner starting at the odds of 6/1. Indeed, the last time a horse in double figure odds won was Star Witness back in 2010.

Another interesting piece of history is that jockey Dwayne Dunn saluted in every edition of the race between 2005 and 2008.

He leads the race with most wins for a jockey (4), while David Hayes's five winners make him the most successful trainer in the race.

2018 Blue Diamond Stakes

Last year's edition saw Written By explode at the top of the Caulfield straight.

Even though Enbihaar and Oohood were finishing quickly, Written By still won by a dominant 2.5 lengths.
