What makes the race so unique is that it is only open to two-year-old horses. It's always exciting to see the fillies and colts dash over the 1,200 metres, in what can be a very unpredictable race.
For this reason, the Golden Slipper is also a fascinating betting race. As many of the horses come in only having had one or two starts, there isn't much form to go on, often leading to shock results.
The Golden Slipper Stakes has long been considered one of the four majors of Australian horse racing. Along with the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate, the Golden Slipper is thought of as one of Australia's most prestigious races to win.
It's impossible to talk about the Golden Slipper and not mention T.J. Smith and Gai Waterhouse. The father and daughter pair have each won the race a record six times. That was until Farnan got the chocolates for Gai 2020, taking her to seven Slipper wins, and taking her to the outright lead.
First run in 1957, the Golden Slipper has a long honour roll of high-quality horses. Some of the most notable winners include Vain in 1969, Manikato in 1978 and Pierro in 2012.
However, a knock on the Slipper is that many of the winning horses don't stay in racing, but are soon after sent to stud or to stand as a broodmare.
This has led to the introduction of the Golden Eagle in the spring, which is aimed at enticing the owners of these high quality younger horses to stay in racing.
2018 Golden Slipper
The 2018 edition of the race saw a tough all-the-way victory from Estijaab. Brenton Avdulla made every post a winner in an impressive winning ride, just having enough gas in the tank to hold off a fast-finishing Oohood.
2019 Golden Slipper
In 2019, it was the royal blue of Godolphin that dominated the race.
Kiamichi upstaged her highly-fancied stablemates Microphone and Lyre, making every post a winner on the wet track.
2020 Golden Slipper
Gai Waterhouse, alongside Adrian Bott, trained 2020 Slipper winner Farnan, taking her into the outright lead with seven victories in the race.
Farnan was just too quick and too fit for his opposition. He got to the front and never looked like being caught.
