Spring Champion Stakes

The Spring Champion Stakes has long been regarded as Sydney's premier staying event for three-year-olds during the Spring Carnival. In 2019 it will be held on Caulfield Guineas day, ensuring that the attention isn't focused solely on the Melbourne race card.

First contested in 1971, the Spring Champion Stakes has a habit of producing winners that have gone onto bigger and better things. Notable examples include Kingston Town in 1979, Tie the Knot in 1997, and It's A Dundeel in 2012, who all won the race as three-year-olds before having accomplished careers.

There's no doubt that the Spring Champion Stakes is a high-quality race that can be regarded as the grand final for Sydney's three-year-old stayers. However, trainers can also use the Spring Champion Stakes as a stepping stone into races such as the Victoria Derby and VRC Oaks, that are contested over the trying distance of 2,500 metres.

That's not to take away from the difficulty of the Spring Champion Stakes. The 2,000 metre course at Randwick with its infamous rise after the turn into the home straight is a tough examination for the young horses.

As most horses come into the race with a question mark over whether they will run out a strong 2,000 metres, the race has the tendency to throw up a shock winner or two. In fact, the average winning price over the past decade is $11.50.
