There’s nothing like an inside-out barrier draw to throw a cat among the pigeons.
This looks like a full-blown “map maze” amongst the three-year-olds, lining up for the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m.
The early market is dominated by two last-start winners.
One who likes to control proceedings from the front, and another who unleashes from the tail, but this isn’t as straightforward as it looks on paper.
With all three runners under single figures drawn wide, the tactical battles start long before the gates open.
Don’t rule out one roughie who’s yet to place in five starts, but is screaming to peak at the right trip and can shake this up at a monster price.
Spring Champion Stakes 2025 Tips & Best Bets
Track Conditions
The rail moves out to 7m from the mile to the winning post, 4m wider than last Saturday, which will be significant.
The inside lanes will likely chop up early, pushing the action wider as the meeting progresses.
With no rain in sight, expect a Good 4 track that could edge toward a 3 by race time.
Fast and fair, but favouring those coming down the middle late in the day.
The Speed Map
Expect Shangri La Boy to hold the front from his low draw, with San Giovanni, Officiate, and Crusader Voyage getting dream runs tucked right behind the leader.
The likes of Master Of The Air, Champagne Hero, Southern Prince, and Within The Law all draw wide and will try to find cover midfield.
Attica and Federalist are likely to drift back early and be charging late — especially if they roll along early and turn this into a true staying test.
The Favourite
Shangri La Boy ($3.50) is flying and deserves favouritism after dominant wins, including the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes.
But while he’ll get every chance to dictate, this is a deeper race and he’s short enough given the lack of pressure up front.
Neil’s Best Bet
Federalist ($26.00) – Each-Way Play
The sleeper in the field.
He’ll be ridden cold and saved for one big burst from the 500m.
No runner is crying out for 2000m like he is after closing off nicely behind Attica in the Listed Dulcify over the mile.
If they go even a touch too hard early, he’ll be the one flashing late.
The Dangers
-
Attica ($4.00) – Lightly raced, improving, and armed with a strong sectional sprint. The logical danger.
-
Shangri La Boy ($3.50) – Tough front-runner with the perfect Waterhouse-Bott profile; must be caught.
-
Officiate ($27.00) – Ridiculous overs. Maps perfectly behind the speed and peaking at the right time.
-
Within The Law ($4.60) – Back to her own age group after taking on elite older horses in the King Charles. Classy and suited up in trip.
Neil’s Top Five
- Federalist
- Attica
- Shangri La Boy
- Officiate
- Within The Law
