Sires Produce Stakes

Sires Produce Stakes

Distance 1400m
Grade Group 1
Track  Royal Randwick
Prizemoney $1,000,000
Class Set Weights for 2YOs
2020 winner

King's Legacy ($19)

The Sires Produce Stakes is a Group One race for 2YO colts and fillies during the Sydney Autumn Carnival. It is run on the first day of the Championships, and often sees many runners from the Golden Slipper field back up for another crack at a Group One prize.

The Sires Produce Stakes actually forms the middle leg of the Australian Triple Crown for two-year-olds. The first is the Golden Slipper over 1,200 metres, and the third and final leg is the Champagne Stakes over a mile.

The step up to 1,400 metres for the Sires Produce appeals to trainers who see their horses run on during the Golden Slipper, but just run out of room to claim the win. Nevertheless, the horse that takes out the Sires Produce Stakes still needs to have plenty of dash to outsprint some of Australia's best young horses.

Like the Australian Derby and the Doncaster that are contested on the same day, the Sires Produce is a race with a long and proud history. It was inaugurated back in 1867, and has seen the likes of Ajax, Tulloch, Wenona Girl and Octagonal take out first place.

The Sires Produce is also a race where punters have a fairly good idea of which horses have the superior quality. This is reflected in the odds of the winners since 2011, all of which have been in single-figures. That was until the massive boilover in 2018, when the 100/1 shot El Dorado Dreaming got the chocolates.

2018 Sires Produce Stakes

The 2018 edition of the race was one of the most memorable in recent years.

The roughie of the field El Dorado Dreaming was ridden cold at the back of the pack. He then came the widest on the turn and let down with a huge run down the centre of the track. This was just enough to defeat race favourite Oohood, who snuck through along the rails and was pipped in the photo finish.

2019 Sires Produce Stakes

In 2019 it was Microphone who snuck through with a rails run to claim the win.

Microphone's stablemate Kiamichi looked set to claim the win before Microphone flew on the inside to get the chocolates.

2020 Sires Produce Stakes

This year King's Legacy came from a mile back to produce an upset in the Sires Produce.

Prague kicked away at the top of the straight and looked set to go on with it but King's Legacy really got stuck into his work inside the final furlong, pulling away in the final few strides.
