Following months of lead-up races with varying form lines, the 2024 Golden Slipper has arrived presenting punters with a gifted array of two-year-olds.

A complete field of 16 has been assembled with unbeaten short-priced favourite Storm Boy standing between one of the widest betting markets in Slipper history.

The bookies and punters however are running scared of the $60 million dollar colt on the top line of betting.

While normally this is a race that generates heated discussions online, all the talk is about not who will win, but how far 'he' will win by.

I, however can't agree with that sentiment.

While Storm Boy has put in dynamic performances, I've locked onto some glaring red flags that could bring the 'star of Coolmore' unstuck on Grand Final day.

Rosehill Race 8 - Golden Slipper (1200m)

Track Conditions

With the surface slowly drying, we should start the meeting on something around a Soft 5, with the rail nudged out 2m.

Look for runners in the first half of the fields to have the keys to the races.

The Speed Map

Tactics are going to be so interesting here.

With 6 Waterhouse / Bott horses entered they will want to jump and dominate proceedings from the front half of the field.

The issue is however, that if the other runners let this happen, they will stand next to no chance to catch them in the straight.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the rougher horses in the field challenge early and create a breakneck tempo.

This should suit runners just forward of midfield who can pounce.

The Favourite - Storm Boy

He is a deserving favourite and while punters are sure to have their reasons to back him, I just can't entertain the $2.15 on offer as "value".

He is a physical specimen who could pass as a matured 3YO, yet I have started to notice some mental factors coming into play.

He was half a stride slow in his last start win in the Skyline Stakes and it was only from a lack of intent from other riders that he could find the front.

If he produces the same here, it could be curtains buried 4/5 back the fence.

The other factor is if he is asked to take a sit amongst traffic.

Will he like it? If he over races he may struggle for an effort towards the end of 1200m off a three week freshen up.

If he gets it right, it's his slipper but these factors make me happy to oppose him.

Luke's Best Bet

Coleman ($31.00/$6.50) produced a top run just a week ago in the Pago Pago stakes when coming a mile off them to run third.

It was hard to make ground on the day and he swooped to finish only 2L from the winner who got all the favours in front.

He was green on that occasion when tackling the Rosehill bend and will only be further improved after that run.

He handles all conditions and draws perfectly in barrier 4 to land midfield in the moving line.

Just needs a clear run at them to be in the finish.

Best value in the race.

The Dangers

Can make cases for Shangri La Express ($51.00), Straight Charge ($13.00) and Hayasugi ($18.00) at big prices.
