We’re set for an exciting day of racing at Geelong this Wednesday, with beautiful weather leading into one of the biggest days on the calendar.

With the rail in the True position on-speed horses should have a slight advantage, but I see tempo dictating plenty of races.

This year’s Geelong Cup features a fascinating field of 15 runners, competing for $500,000 in prize money.

The speed map adds another layer of intrigue to the race, as only a few horses are likely to advance early.

Mister Wolfgang, Unusual Legacy, and Birdman appear to be the primary pace-setters, but with wide barriers (13 and 10, respectively), they’ll need to be assertive to secure good positions.

Meanwhile, the majority of the field prefers to settle around midfield, including key contenders.

Notably, Francesco Guardi, Amade, and Onesmoothoperator are likely to settle towards the rear and will be relying on a well-timed run to figure in the finish.

With such a mix of running styles and strategies, this year’s Geelong Cup promises to be a tactical battle, adding to the excitement of an already intriguing contest.

Unusual Legacy #9 Unusual Legacy $3.10

Unusual Legacy brings in some excellent form, having chased home the likes of Land Legend and Zardozi. To add to his credentials, Athabascan has since come out and won, franking that form even further.

Now, with Joao Moreira taking over from Jay Ford and this being a Waller-trained horse coming down from Sydney, everything points to a peak performance here.

His benchmark numbers have consistently improved this prep, and it feels like he’s set to deliver his best run yet.

Birdman #14 Birdman $5.50

While I’m not talking about the 2013 NBA champion, Birdman in this context refers to another Waller-trained runner having its first start in Australia.

With a lightweight and Beau Mertens aboard, Birdman is in a great position from barrier 4 to roll forward and dictate terms.

He could be tough to run down if given a soft lead and at this weight, he’s a must-play.

Murramasa #3 Murramasa $6.50

Murramasa is in great form and posted his career-best rating third-up last year in the 2600m Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington, on similar ground to what he’ll face here.

The wide draw could pose some challenges, but I expect Daniel Moor to ride positively and either slot into a handy spot or push forward if necessary.

His form lines are strong, having finished close behind quality horses like Pericles and Star Vega.

With solid form in tougher company, Murramasa is ready to fire in this cracking race.

Bonus Play: Race 9 #11 Boltsaver

Another horse I’m keen on is Boltsaver in the final race.

With Jamie Kah aboard, he looks a strong contender to finish the day on a winning note.

Keep an eye out for this one in the last!
