Michael Manley – Flemington Best Bet 16/5/26

Flemington Race 9 – #11 Mr Blunt

Mr Blunt looks a horse going places and I see no reason to jump off him here.

The lightly raced gelding has now won three of his five starts and his latest victory over this same track and distance suggested there is still plenty more improvement to come.

He toyed with his rivals in a Benchmark 74 on Anzac Day and was never really pushed out, yet still produced one of the sharper closing sectionals of the entire meeting with the seventh fastest final 200m of the day.

What impressed me most was the manner in which he did it despite sitting wide throughout the run. He absorbed the extra work comfortably and still put the race away with authority late.

He drops two kilos from that victory and while this is obviously a rise in class, he profiles as the type of horse capable of measuring up quickly.

There’s a lot to like about his progression and at this stage of his career, I’m happy to stick with a horse that clearly has upside.
