The race that stops a nation is just around the corner, with the excitement starting to build. The world-renowned two-mile handicap remains the undisputed feature of the Spring Carnival, with millions of eyes sure to be glued to the race at 3pm next Tuesday.

The Melbourne Cup has been dominated by the international raiders over the past decade, and that's set to be the case once again. In fact, of the 41 horses still nominated for the race, just four are Australian-bred.

Another notable trend in recent years has been the success of lightweight horses. The past four editions of the Melbourne Cup were won by horses carrying 53, 52, 51.5 and 51kg respectively.

The last two Melbourne Cups were won by international three-year-olds who got in very light in the weights. This has led to a slight tweaking of the weight scale, meaning that international three-year-olds will now carry at least 52kg (filly) or 52.5kg (colt).

But perhaps the most interesting storyline heading into the Cup is Damian Lane. The young hoop is looking to be the first person in history to complete the grand slam, having already won the Golden SlipperCaulfield Cup and Cox Plate this year.

Lane will be aboard Japonese raider Mer De Glace, who is aiming to do the Caulfield/Melbourne Cup double.
