2019 was a big year for our great sport of horse racing.

Not only did the mighty mare Winx hang up her horseshoes, but the Australian-bred Vow And Declare took out the Melbourne Cup.

It was a big year for punters too, with major profits being raked in by some of the best pro punters in the business.

The media experts were far from disgraced, with a handful of them also winning big and staking their claim as Australia's best form analysts.

But it was a veteran of theGreatTipOff.com who took out the gong for the year's best tipster.

Regular readers of theGreatTipOff.com will be well aware of 2019 Tipster of the Year winner Formulator.

But at a mammoth average price of $47.69, his profit comes as no surprise.

The silver medal for 2019 goes to pro punter Elcocapitan, who finished up with $11,220 in cash profit from $100 win bets.

This West Australian whose real name is Travis Murray put in a fine display of tipping, after finding 80 winners at an average price of $5.10.

But it was his strike rate that was most impressive.

Travis' 80 winners came at an ultra impressive strike rate just under 30%.

To go a whole year tipping winners with just about every third selection is a mighty achievement.

Travis is sure to have plenty of followers in 2020.

 

Rounding our the podium for most cash profit in 2019 was Thegrimreaper, who also secured in excess of $10K.

He ended up with $10,630 to be precise, after no less than 239 of his horse racing tips greeted the judge.

These winners came at an average price of $3.93.

What this shows is that there's more than one way to skin a cat.

No matter if you go for the roughies like Formulator, or rack up a bunch of short-priced winners like Thegrimreaper, ending up with a profit is all that matters.

 

Highest POT

It will come as no surprise to learn that Formulator also grabbed the gold in the highest Profit on Turnover (POT) category.

His eye watering $20K profit translated to 48% POT .

For a year's tipping, this really is a remarkable effort.

 

The second runner up in the highest POT category went to a media expert.

Racenet's Laurie Sainsbury had a huge year, finding 24 winners for his followers.

The stats also show that Sainsbury isn't afraid of going for a bit of value.

His average winning price sits at a meaty $12.53.

In terms of POT, Sainsbury secured an incredible 40%.

That means 40 cents in profit for every dollar wagered on Sainsbury's tips.

Coming home with the bronze for 2019 was Travis Murray.

With a stack of winners at a good strike rate and average price, it's no surprise he cracked the highest POT podium as well as securing a huge cash profit.

His 38% POT throughout the year of tipping is a tremendous effort.

Besides Sainsbury, there was a handful of media experts who really showed their class in 2019.

It was a great year for SKY Racing, with several from their stable securing a profit. 

Paul Francis and Tony Wode both finished the year with 21% POT, whilst John Forsythe and Craig Sant finished close behind their colleagues with 18% and 17% POT respectively. This once again proves that race callers are great form analysts, with local knowledge often giving them a leg up.  

Looking elsewhere, and Grace Ramage had a break-out year.

The Racing.com analyst generated 18% POT from her 131 winning tips throughout 2019. This is ultra-impressive considering she's required to finalise her selections two days before race day in order to meet editorial deadlines, unlike punters who can wait until minutes before the jump.

Ramage is right at the forefront of the new generation of racing journalists that are starting to make a splash and all signs point to her making even bigger strides in 2020.

Deserved Mentions

We couldn't finish our wrap-up of 2019 without mentioning some of the big name media tipsters.

Deane Lester had yet another profitable year, after finishing up with just shy of $2K in profit from $100 win bets resulting in 3% POT.

The highlight was undoubtedly his performance in the toughest week on the racing calendar, the Flemington Carnival.

Punters who followed Lester's racing package which you can get here, strung three consecutive winning days together across Derby, Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day. Even better was the fact that the Melbourne guru managed to tip the winner in each of the feature Group One events on those days.

Meanwhile in Sydney, David Gately proved himself as a track specialist at NSW headquarters Randwick. 

The popular from analyst finished the year with $5,480 cash profit from 61 winning tips at the track, resulting in 29% POT.

Tip of the Year

There's no prizes for guessing who took out the 2019 tip of the year.

In the middle of October whilst every man and his dog was focused on the lead up to The Everest and Caulfield Cup, Formulator was busy studying form at regional Victorian and NSW tracks.
