SA Derby

South Australian Derby

Distance 2500m
Grade Group 1
Track  Morphettville
Prize money $600,000
Class Set Weights for 3YOs
2019 winner

Qafila ($17)

The SA Derby is one of the oldest and most prestigious races in Adelaide, if not Australia. Run on the second day of the Morphettville Carnival, the SA Derby sees some of this land's best colts and fillies complete a lap and a bit of the big Morphettville track, looking to claim first prize and the biggest cut of the $600,000 prize purse.

First run all the way back in 1860, the SA Derby is one of Australia's oldest races that is still contested today. Incredibly, it is even a year older than the Melbourne Cup

The race's longevity has led to the SA Derby holding a special place in South Australia's racing DNA. Especially given the 150+ years of history, that adds weight to each new running.

While it has become rare in recent years, the SA Derby winner has occasionally gone on to bigger and better things. A few winners, including The Assyrian and Gatum Gatum won the SA Derby before going on to triumph in the Melbourne Cup later in their careers.

And don't forget Subzero. One of Australia's favourite horses triumphed in the 1992 SA Derby, before going on to claim both the Adelaide and Melbourne Cups.

The 2500 metre start at Morphettville sees the gates crash open in front of the grandstand. Horses then complete a 200m gallop to the winning post, before completing a whole lap of the Morphettville course. Like all Derbies, this is a genuine staying test.

Punters have a fairly good record in this race of late. Six favourites have won since 2008, although no fav has got the chocolates in the last four editions.

2018 SA Derby

In 2018, it was the Darren Weir-trained Leicester that greeted the judge. This horse is now known as Helene Leadingstar, and races in Hong Kong.

2019 SA Derby

This year, it was the filly Qafila that proved to be too good for the boys.

Qafila won in dominant fashion, making the placegetters Savvy Oak and Mr Quickie look very ordinary.
