Doomben Cup

Doomben Cup

Distance 2000m
Grade Group 1
Track  Doomben
Prize money $650,000
Class WFA
2018 winner

Comin' Through ($9)

The Doomben Cup is one of the feature races of the Brisbane Winter Carnival. It's always a highlight to see the Sunshine State's best WFA horses, as well as some quality interstate raiders, complete the circuit of the tight-turning Doomben track.

The Doomben Cup was inaugurated in 1933. And despite subtle changes to the distance over the years, the race has always remained true to itself, as a high-quality middle distance race.

And just like most Group 1 middle distance Weight-for-Age races in Australia, there are some champions of the turf on the honour roll. The name that jumps out is Berborough, who took out the 1946 edition- the year where he won no less than 12 principal races.

Besides Berborough, the likes of Bore Head, Rough Habit, and Might and Power all tasted victory in the Doomben Cup.

As mentioned above, Doomben is one of the smaller metropolitan tracks in Australia. The bends are tight-turning, and the 2000-metre start sees the field complete more than a lap of the course, with the gates crashing open in front of the grandstand.

Punters haven't had the best time of it in the past three editions of the race. That's because all three winners have paid $9 or more. Punters will be hoping the favourites can hit back in years to come

2018 Doomben Cup

Last year, it was the Chris Waller-trained Comin' Through who showed his class.

Comin' Through was given a gun ride by Michael Walker, who rode him quiet near the back of the field. That was before he loomed up around the home bend, and let down with a strong run. While Egg Tart was gallant in second, Comin' Through was just too good.
