Autumn carnival wind down
Steve HartThe stand alone Hawkesbury meeting signals the wind down of the hectic Sydney Autumn carnival and it is fitting to see Saturday racing showcased in the more relaxed atmosphere at the foot of the mountains.
The card has an abundance of quality entered, with no fewer than three stake races for punters to analyse.
I have gone searching for value and believe a number of the favourites to be under the odds at their current quotes.
Race 6 XXXX Gold Hawkesbury Rush (Listed Quality) 1100m
There appears to be plenty of speed here, with noted front runners Spending To Win (15) and Junglized (13) both drawn out and a number of on-pace types to their inside.
Badajoz (4) appears the best value runner. He has had an 11 week freshen and loves it first up (6:2-2-0). No doubt James Cummings had this race in mind a long way out and he will be trained to the minute.
Tango Rain (1) can scoot through along the inside from the good draw to lead or sit just in behind the first pair. He looks "the map" horse and has won in this grade before.
The Kris Lees stable must always be respected and they have the race favourite Tactical Advantage (8) who goes in everything. From a price angle, he is lowered to third pick.
Whilst the one at big odds ($26) has to be Gibraltar Girl (5), entered by the white-hot Mark Newnham stable who seem to always place them to advantage.
Best Racing Tips
1st Badajoz
2nd Tango Rain
3rd Tactical Advantage
4th Gibraltar Girl
Race 7 Hawkesbury Guineas (Group 3, 3yo) 1400m
Another race where the tempo should be strong, with both Sheriff (9) and Kylease (3) to run them along.
Kylease (3) has to be one of the best backed runners this weekend and has firmed from $3.80 to $2.90. I have to respect the money and high profile ownership group, who expect results.
I like the prospects of Quackerjack at odds ($10). He has the tactical speed to take a position midfield in the running line and from there can peel and run home hard over the top.
Trope (4) has been a street corner tip all the way through this prep and dominated to win on debut before failing at his past two. Give him one more chance.
Throw in Military Zone (6) who James McDonald has opted to ride. He usually takes his pick and although this runner is well found in betting, the gun hoop's decision to jump aboard must be respected.
Best Racing Tips
1st Quackerjack
2nd Kylease
3rd Trope
4th Military Zone
Race 8 Hawkesbury Cup (Group 3 Hcp) 1600m
There is a big chance they crawl in this and those runners in the first half of the field could hold the advantage.
Zourkhan (4) is one who can race handy from the good draw to be close enough when they sprint. He has been smashed in early betting ($12 into $4.80) and should simply win.
Archedemus (5) and Tom Melbourne (2) are the two most likely to roll straight to the front before "racking and stacking" them all. They must be included and represent two of the best "mapping" horses of the day.
Sixties Groove (3) has the right draw to be more forward and if they opt to use the gate and be positive, he can run a cheeky race at odds ($21)
Best Racing Tips
1st Zourkhan
2nd Archedemus
3rd Tom Melbourne
4th Sixties Groove
Race 9 Blakes Marine Hcp (BM 78) 1300m
Only a moderate tempo is predicted here, with very little speed engaged. El Mo (5) possibly goes forward to lead.
Signore Fox (3) ran well last start in Listed grade and should find this assignment much easier. He gets James McDonald to steer and has the Team Snowden polish on his side. Yes.
From a speed map angle, Wagner (4) and Vinnie Power (14) are the two with tactical speed. They can be ridden in a more forward position to take advantage of the slow pace.
Best of the rest is Grimoire (9), who found the line well last start at Warwick Farm. He travelled four wide throughout with no cover and was still there at the end. Could surprise a few in this.
Best Racing Tips
1st Signore Fox
2nd Wagner
3rd Grimore
4th Vinnie Power
