28/3/20 David Gately Tancred Stakes Day Review

Rosehill Racing Review

Racing was at ROSEHILL on Saturday on a SOFT-7 track. This track has had some tough racing of late on some very wet tracks and is struggling! There seemed to be a distinct advantage to those horses on-speed but off the inside rail. There were three run-on winners though: VERRY ELLEEGANT (2400m race), NIGHT’S WATCH (saved ground) and CASCADIAN.

Run of the Day

No shock there was a dominant winner from your near 3,000 votes! VERRY ELLEEGANT was one of the wins of the year to date, she is now becoming what many of us thought she could be!

VERRY ELLEEGANT ended up a fair way back early and was a little keen (nothing unusual there) in a slowly run race by G1 standards. The race went on when DANCETERIA took off 1000m out and VERRY ELLEEGANT gave some ground, still way back 600m out and things looked grim given the track pattern to date. When JMac asked her to improve the response was immediate and she went from looking in strife to looking in complete control straightening up. She then raced away to win by 4.3L with rider soft on her late.

These were not hacks she beat up on! Runner-up MUSTAJEER was just beaten 3.5L by Master Of Wine and 1.8L in the 2019 Caulfield Cup. Oh, and he won the Ebor at York remember.

AVILIUS had the back of the winner but was left for dead, he was pipped for second.

MIRAGE DANCER was 2.4L off him and 6.8L off the winner. He had run third (beaten 1.2L) in that same Caulfield Cup, a race that produced the Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare.

MUGATOO was beaten 9L. Let’s hope we get to see a Queen Elizabeth Stakes in a few weeks and the clash of her and Master Of Wine plus, some world-class internationals like DANON PREMIUM who has beaten Lys Graceaux and run second to Almond Eye… Wowee !!

The other G1 race was the Vinery and SHOUT THE BAR was able to lead and keep running! Her lead-up run at Kembla was excellent and she was 1150m-to-1600m that day. So here she was jumping again quite quickly in trip to 2000m taking on some elite fillies, and beating them! She ran 1-33.57 for her 1st-1400m. Compared to the other 2000m race on the day, the Tulloch Stakes (boys), she went roughly 20-22L slower for that 1st-1400m section. She was well-rated sure but do note the leader in said Tulloch Stakes went way too hard.

Back to the Vinery for now: PROBABEEL had a good run off-pace in-between runners and kept closing, she is on target.

NUDGE had the gun trail given the pattern and did loom along the inside, but first two were stronger over the last 100m (home 11.74 last 200m Vs Probabeel’s 11.36 - fastest of day).

FUNSTAR was relegated to fourth. She is forgivable here for mine. She raced keen and was exposed 3-wide a long way from home against the pattern. She did peak late and word is will be ridden colder into the 2400m of the Oaks.

These four fillies gapped the rest headed by GAME OF THORNS (even effort) and ASIAGO (sat 2nd/ no match).

CONTRITION did her best work late (home 11.76) and would be a lovely bet in something easier…They ran 2-08.28

The Tulloch Stakes we touched on: A fast pace set by PRIDE OF ADELAIDE who was way too keen, he went 1-28.86 1st-1400m and winner QUICK THINKER had a lovely trail. JMac joined in at the right time with ZEBROWSKI behind him and chasing. He ended up running second and kept closing recording 12.32 last 200m (race-fastest) whilst winner was 12.41.

Worth noting the winner had 36.44 last 600m which was 3/100ths faster than the runner-up’s.

DIASONIC tracked the leader and the hot pace. He joined in but was no match for the quinella.

RELUCENT came wide before the turn against the days pattern and kept closing (home 12.58) and has run really well if you are a believer in the bias on the day. Time: 2-05.75

VEGADAZE was back in trip in the G3 Star Kingdom and was able to lead VILLAMI. He is settling much better himself these days, he left the rail and kicked strongly when challenged by MANICURE along the inside. Sure he had match-fitness over a few behind him but did love the will to win here!

KEMENTARI was 1st-up off a long break and ran home hard. He was within 0.6L of winner on the wire and gave the quinella 5.5kg. These three had 3.3L on the rest of the field headed by TACTICAL ADVANTAGE (sound/ had chance) and GOD OF THUNDER (closed off well for easier).

VILLAMI faded at the end of 1200m when unable to control things. Time: 1-11.00 off 36.27 1st-600m

Race 4 was the G3 Sellwood Stakes. The speed was good (1-28.69 1st-1400m - quicker than the fierce Pride Of Adelaide on the day) with pressure!

NIGHT’S WATCH has been a tease but he was suited here off the mad speed. His rider JMac is airborne and smartly saved ground before squeezing through and holding off ALIFEROUS who came from off-midfield. She hooked out and just missed.

SHADOW FLIGHT was given a gun ride and also just missed. It was a 3-way go and they had 2L on HOUSE OF CARTIER who was the one up attacking that speed and worked early, she went enormous! SAUNTER BOY did some nice work late for the right race also. Time: 2-05.57 so, they have gone only slightly quicker than 3yo males on the day.

Race 8 was the Emancipation Stakes for the girls and the flying POSITIVE PEACE measured up! She sat second on a solid clip (56.04 1st-900m) and took over, then kept going too well for some classy mares. Her margin was 1.3L beating NOIRE who closed off well along the inside.

AMANGIRI led the winner and battled well when headed, she held third.

MISS FABULASS ran on well from off-midfield and looked a big hope 200m out, she went 12.19 home so others (even winner - 12.12) were a bit stronger but her effort was good on a tough day for swoopers.

SWEET DEAL couldn’t control things and safe to say, 1500m tests her, plus, better conditions than a Soft-7 I fancy would have helped also.

DELECTATION GIRL made good ground. Her 11.96 was the race-fastest in fact and she was the only one to break 12-seconds home.

OCEANEX also ran on (12.03) on those inside lanes. Time: 1-31.67 for the 1500m.

CASCADIAN won the Doncaster Prelude (also 1500m) running 1-31.66 off a strong speed (55.91 1st-900m). He was last early, he made ground between them then surged late despite carrying 58kg. The win was terrific given the pattern, and his weight. Live Doncaster hope I fancy.

MASK OF TIME had the rails trail and was every hope but was only pipped late.

GAULOIS was solid from midfield but the winner came from behind him. He had 58kg himself though.

RAINBOW THIEF didn't quicken but was good late, his 11.90 last 200m was bettered only by the winner, who was the clear fastest, in 11.60.

DEALMAKER should have finished a bit closer but doubt he would have threatened the winner even with clear air.
