Doomben Cup Race Information
Doomben Cup
The Doomben Cup is one of the feature races of the Brisbane Winter Carnival.
It's always a highlight to see the Sunshine State's best WFA horses, as well as some quality interstate raiders, complete the circuit of the tight-turning Doomben track.
The Doomben Cup was inaugurated in 1933. Despite subtle changes to the distance over the years, the race has always remained true to itself, as a high-quality middle distance race.
Just like most Group 1 middle distance Weight-for-Age races in Australia, there are some champions of the turf on the honour roll.
The name that jumps out is Berborough, who took out the 1946 edition, the year where he won no less than 12 races.
Besides Berborough, the likes of Bore Head, Rough Habit, and Might and Power all tasted victory in the Doomben Cup.
As mentioned above, Doomben is one of the smaller metropolitan tracks in Australia. The bends are tight-turning, and the 2000m start sees the field complete more than a lap of the course, with the gates crashing open in front of the grandstand.
Before Zaaki dominated in 2021, winning by 7 lengths, Punters haven't had the best of luck with the race. From 2017-2019 all winners paid over $9.
Punters will be hoping favourite for this year's event Zaaki can replicate his performance from the year before.
