The gruelling 2500m of the Victoria Derby gives Australian racegoers their first look at who could be our emerging staying stars.

The 2023 edition has hot favourite Riff Rocket the one that most punters think could become the talking point for the 2024 Melbourne Cup carnival.

Only 12 months ago, Riff Rocket’s stablemate Soulcombe won a 2500m contest during Cup week at Flemington and is one of the main contenders for Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.

Pretty even across with some extra cushion near the inside rail suggesting 2 or 3 horses off the rail will be a slight advantage over hard against the fence.

The best chance they have of beating Riff Rocket is if they test his stamina.

Watched him at Moonee Valley last week and he was a gangly type that didn’t corner that well.

Looks like a genuine improver at Flemington and on the back-up.

Maps well too.

 

 RIFF ROCKET $2.25

If you’re playing the race you must have a saver on him.

He’s explosive and could be lengths better than these judging by his win here two starts back in the Super Impose Stakes.
