Metro racing in South Australia heads out to Gawler this Saturday for what promises to be a highly competitive Winter card.

With the rail in the true position and the track rated a Soft 7, punters can expect a reasonably fair surface early before wider lanes potentially come into play later in the day.

Gawler’s long straight and tight home bend often rewards horses with momentum and cover.

Heath Pope has identified a few value runners ideally suited to the likely tempo and track conditions.

Here are his top-rated each-way plays for the meeting:

Best Bets for Gawler from Heath Pope 5/7/25

Race 4 #6 VINTAGE STAR

Current Odds: $11.00 | Rated Price: $5.00

Vintage Star finally gets a set-up to suit fourth-up and drops back in grade after a strong effort last start behind quality types in a BM78.

He ran home in smart late sectionals (32.91) despite racing wide and now returns to his preferred 1000–1100m range.

With Toeroek back aboard (2 from 3 wins on him), he maps to sit just behind a strong tempo and Vintage Star profiles as a serious winning chance at double-figure odds.

Race 5 #7 TUPOLEU

Current Odds: $34.00 | Rated Price: $10.00

Tupoleu comes off a strong front-running effort at Morphettville and strikes a race devoid of early pressure.

From the wide draw, he can roll forward, control the tempo and make this a genuine test from the front.

With three wins already this prep, two on rain-affected tracks, he’s proven when left alone in front.

Gawler suits on-speed runners on soft ground and if he finds the top, he’ll be very hard to run down.

At $34, he’s a genuine knockout hope.

Race 6 #7 GARCON RENARD

Current Odds: $9.50 | Rated Price: $6.00

Garcon Renard was unlucky not to place last start after being badly held up from the 250m to the 100m, yet still found the line strongly once clear.

He’s now 5th-up and returns to Gawler, the scene of a dominant win two starts back.

He maps midfield with cover, gets his preferred wet conditions, and with even luck in the run, looks ready to peak again.

Neindorf sticks and knows how to time his run.

A strong each-way play at close to double-figure odds.
