This is the smarter play

It is shaping up to be a tricky meeting at Headquarters with only two favourites below $3 across the card.

As a result, there is plenty of value for this meeting and there are two plays that stand out as terrific value bets to have at $10 & $6.50 respectively.

As of Thursday morning, the Flemington track is currently rated as a Heavy 8.

With more scattered showers forecast on Friday and Saturday, we should be on a Soft 7 come race time.

The running rail is out 3m and should allow for all runners to get their chance.

I have high confidence that we will be getting a winning return from this week’s two best bets!

Flemington Race 3 #5 Scampi $10.00

I'm taking on the raging hot $2.15 favourite in ‘First Settler’ here with this Blue Point colt.

He has yet to fire in his race starts to date but has competed in some high quality 2yo fields.

Last start at Caulfield, he ran 5th in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes behind Golden Slipper runner-up ‘Coleman’ and Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes winner ‘Eneeza’.

Prior to that, he ran 5th in a Golden Gift behind ‘Shangri La Express’ and jumped as favourite in the Group 3 Breeders Plate but failed on debut.

This is a far easier race than what he has contested to date and love the way he looks to have returned.

He recently had an eye-catching second place in a recent Cranbourne jump-out that was on a Soft 7.

While the hype around the favourite is justified, the price that the Price & Kent Jnr horse currently finds itself at is absurd.

You’d be better off buying a few extra schooners at the pub than putting it in the hopes of this Written Tycoon Colt, who has yet to have even a jump-out on any worse track rating than a Soft 5.

The smarter play is on this Blue Point Colt with a small win / bigger place bet.

Flemington Race 6 #15 South Of Houston $6.50

I've taken on a raging hot favourite from the Price & Kent Jnr stable in the previous race but not risking them here.

This 4yo Deep Field mare has flown under the radar and I expect she will be much shorter around the jump.

She had a solid first-up run at Caulfield, when running 4th behind ‘Kin’ over the 1100m and will be better suited here at the 1200m.

This is a distance she is 2/3 at and a perfect second up record of 2/2.

There were no issues when she tackled Flemington previously and is boosted by getting Jamie Kah in the saddle.

This is Jamie's first meeting in 7 weeks, and Kah has a superb record with trainers Price & Kent Jnr striking at 25%.

Plenty in favour of this 4yo mare to suggest she will win this.

Will be staking heavily on her to get a return big enough to cover the day.
