The Vinery Stud Stakes lays an exciting platform for the 3YO fillies to claim Group 1 glory.

Held at Rosehill over 2000m, the race has attracted top compeititors over the years, and the trend continues here with Prowess heading over from New Zealand.

Prowess has won four stakes races this calendar year, including the G1 Bonecrusher last start.

She has been hammered in early markets indicating a huge run is on the card, but can she conquer the travel and Australia's best?

Luke Hovhanesian has done the form and his on-top pick may surprise.

Track Conditions

You would need to be Nostradamus to know the racing surface this Saturday.

The weatherman is stating there will be rain throughout the week carrying into the weekend, but the rainfall predictions are between 0-10mm daily.

Not the best of guides. If we take an aggregated approach, chances are we are racing on a Soft 5 surface.

The rail goes out 5m from the 1400m-W/Post and stays at 4m for the remainder.

With the inside lanes copping a battering in the past few weeks, we are likely to see those off-speed finally get their chance to storm down the outside.

Race 8 - Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m)

The Map

Looks like a pretty straightforward map.

Papillon Club (3) will make use of the barrier to lead with Soul Choice (13) coming across from out wide.

Prowess (4) and Pavitra (9) will push forward to land in trailing positions behind the two leaders.

So Dazzling (5), Fireburn(6) and Call Di (8) are versatile and will likely attempt to slot in midfield three pairs back.

There will be a bit of argy-bargy behind these with runners attempting to find cover from their barriers, including those drawn out wide.

The Favourite

Prowess stock is at an all-time high, after a solid enough win in the Group 1 Bonecrusher at Pukekohe Park.

While she didn't space them, she did a stack of early work and to still dig deep to win shows the signs of a very talented filly.

The form lines get even better when you see the placegetters behind her, including La Crique who ran 3rd.

That horse was 1.2L 4th in G1 Empire Rose last spring.

She is set to get conditions to suit on Saturday and draws lovely in barrier 4.

The early market support adds confidence.

History/Key Form-lines

  • The most prevalent form leading into the Vinery Stud Stakes has been through the Coolmore Classic or the Kembla Grange Classic.
  • The chute start at Rosehill for the 2000m means that all horses get their chance, with a long run to the first bend. History shows us this with six winners since 2008 that have jumped from barriers 10 or 11.
  • There have been 5 last-start winners who have won the past 12 years.

Best Racing Tips

1st I am siding with the historical formlines and placing Pavitra on top. She absolutely toyed with her rivals second up in the Kembla Grange Classic and looks to have plenty of improvement to come.

A nice positive ride up on pace will give her every chance to land her maiden Group 1.

2nd Prowess form over the ditch is hard to ignore.

She has knocked down every challenge put in front of her and the booking of Mark Zahra gives every indication the horse has been set for this race.

Looks awfully hard to beat.

3rd Pierossa also ran a bottler in the Kembla Grange Classic, coming from a mile off them to snatch a place.

The draw of barrier 2 means they can settle midfield, rather than rearward and with clear running will definitely test the top two in the market.

4th Soul Choice hasn't put a foot wrong this campaign and has been well placed by the stable down in Tasmania.

She now returns to Sydney to tackle the top-tier talent but gives every indication she can challenge from a leading position.

If they hand up the race to her with Clark booked, he could pinch this turning for home.
