The Group 1 Surround Stakes is a classic contest for the 3YO Fillies over 1400m at set weight conditions.

Most recent winners include star gallopers Hinged (2022), Forbidden Love (2021) and Probabeel (2020).

Champion mare More Joyus (2010) is the highest-profile winner of this race since its inception.

Race 7 - Surround Stakes (1400m)

The Map

There looks to be strong early speed engaged, with Cinderella Days (1) and North Star Lass (12) set to fight out the lead.

Zougotcha (11) can tag North Star Lass across if they want to be aggressive, whilst Sheeza Belter (9) will look to do the same.

Assuming In Secret (4) jumps with them, she'll map a treat and can settle two pairs back in the running line for a lovely run in transit.

Of the more fancied runners, Sunshine In Paris (3) can settle in the top half of the field, while Madame Pommery (6) looks set to settle just beyond midfield.

History/Key Form-lines

  • The Group 2 Lightfingers Stakes is a key lead up race, with 11 of the 13 runners coming through that form line

The Favorite

In Secret produced a career peak job in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud down the Flemington straight last prep, stamping herself as one of the most progressive gallopers in the land.

She defeated subsequent winners Lofty Strike 3.3L (Group 2 Rubiton), Coolangatta 3.6L (Group 1 Lightning), Jacquinot 4L (Group 3 Manfred & Group 1 CF Orr).

She's since returned to the track with a pretty easy first-up win and according to trainer James Cummings, her feet have grown out and she's in career best order.

We are yet to see her ceiling and it appears the best is yet to come.

Best Racing Tips

1st  In Secret missed the start in the Lightfingers, before finding her feet shortly after to hold a midfield position. Shortly after turning for home, she was asked to go through her gears on her way to a 0.2L win.  She produced a 96.7 rating, given her career peak rating is 102.2, she has a stack of improvement to come.

2nd Sunshine In Paris sat closer in the run last start and had every possible when running a career peak 96.2 rating. She's drawn to do the same again and any give out of the track suits, but I doubt she can turn the tables on In Secret.

3rd Madame Pommery produced a solid first-up run after settling back from the wide gate. The 2-week back up into the second-up run is a profile that suggests she may be flat on Saturday and that she's been set to produce a peak run third-up. I'm willing to risk her, but I'll more than likely be keen to be with her third-up.

4th A Lot More Love will benefit stepping out to the 1400m on Saturday. She can sit a little closer from the soft draw, but will need luck in the run. I think we'll see her best over a mile third-up.
