This week, we focus on two popular Randwick favourites, both of whom are likely to encounter speed map issues when forced to settle in inferior positions in-running.

In the Frank Packer Plate, Team Hawkes appear desperate to land a win with their stable star now deeper into the prep, but his natural get-back pattern is significantly against him here.

Meanwhile in the James Carr Stakes, a high-profile filly faces a tricky map from a low draw and may require a lot of luck to find clear running at the right time.

Avoid both runners at their current short prices in betting.

Now well into his preparation, the stable may be clutching at straws in an attempt to chalk up a carnival win.

There’s no doubt he has plenty of talent, but his get-back racing style always carries risk.

This especially applies at Randwick, where positioning can be everything.

He is likely to be near last in the run and if there’s any hint of leader bias early, he’ll be at a significant disadvantage.

The stable may consider riding him closer, but changing tactics mid-campaign can often backfire, especially if a horse is ridden out of its comfort zone for the first time.

There’s plenty against him here:

  • a negative map
  • potential bias and
  • late-prep placement.

He looks severely unsuited and comes up as an excellent risk at poison odds.

Avoid.

Randwick Race 4 #1 Clean Energy $2.50

A talented filly, but she strikes a deep field here with multiple rivals presenting genuine threats.

Drawn low in gate 2 she has speed drawn all around her, particularly to the outside and I’m not convinced that the inside alley is an advantage.

Unlike some maps floating around, I have several key rivals settling ahead of her.

If that’s the case, she’ll be relying on luck and late splits to have any hope of reeling them in.

With even the slightest leader or rail bias, this becomes a very tough ask.

She could be buried back in the field and chasing while others are off and gone at the 200m.

Lay.
