Group 1 racing is back, and we haven't had to wait long for one of the clashes of the spring.
The Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick brings together a deep field of established stars, but all eyes will be on two outstanding mares making their return — Autumn Glow and Sheza Alibi.
Both arrive with exceptional records. Both love Randwick. Both were dominant at Group 1 level during the autumn.
Now we finally get to see them go head-to-head.
The $1 million weight-for-age feature has become one of the key launching pads of the Sydney Spring Carnival, with recent winners including Via Sistina, Anamoe and the great mare the race is named after.
Chris Waller has also made the race his own, preparing nine winners since 2010 and winning the past three editions with Fangirl in 2023 and Via Sistina in 2024 and 2025.
This year he launches an incredible eight-pronged attack, headed by the favourite Autumn Glow.

Autumn Glow Insights
#8 Autumn Glow – Barrier 3 – James McDonald – 57kg
There isn't much left for Autumn Glow to prove.
The daughter of The Autumn Sun won her first 11 career starts, including three Group 1 victories, before finally tasting defeat when stretched to 2000m in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Even then she hardly disgraced herself, finishing third behind Sir Delius in what was her first attempt beyond the mile.
The important part for Saturday is that she's back to 1400m at Randwick.
That's her territory.
Autumn Glow is unbeaten from two attempts over 1400m and boasts an incredible six wins from seven starts at Randwick.
When resuming over this exact course and distance in the Apollo Stakes last preparation, she put nearly three lengths on Aeliana before going on to win the Verry Elleegant Stakes and George Ryder Stakes.
Chris Waller has indicated her spring will centre around the 1400m and 1600m races rather than stretching her out again, and two trials should have her ready to fire fresh.
Barrier three also gives James McDonald options. With genuine speed expected, she should be able to find cover behind the leaders before getting her opportunity in the straight.
There will be bigger targets ahead, but Autumn Glow has already shown she doesn't need to be deep into a preparation to produce elite performances.
She's the horse they all have to beat.
Sheza Alibi Insights
#14 Sheza Alibi – Barrier 1 – Luke Nolen – 56.5kg
If there is one horse capable of knocking Autumn Glow off her perch, it's Sheza Alibi.
Her autumn campaign was enormous.
The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained mare put together five consecutive victories, highlighted by two performances that announced her as one of Australian racing's brightest young stars.
First came the Randwick Guineas.
Taking on the colts, Sheza Alibi blew them away by more than three lengths.
Then came the Doncaster Mile.
Carrying just 49kg, she came from near the rear before destroying a quality field of older horses by more than four lengths.
In doing so, she became the first filly in 27 years to win the famous Randwick mile.
She now has seven victories from 10 starts without ever missing a placing, while she's also unbeaten from two appearances at Randwick.
Saturday, however, presents a very different challenge.
She's no longer the lightweight filly getting a huge pull in the weights. She meets some of Australia's best horses under weight-for-age conditions and Autumn Glow is only giving her half a kilo.
That makes this an important test of exactly where Sheza Alibi sits.
Barrier one could also be interesting. She's likely to settle somewhere around midfield and Luke Nolen will need to ensure she isn't buried behind horses when the pressure goes on.
Two Pakenham jump-outs have prepared her for the return and, if she picks up where she left off in the Doncaster, Autumn Glow will know she's there.
The Race Doesn't End With The Big Two
The market says this is essentially a match race, but the quality sitting behind Autumn Glow and Sheza Alibi makes the Winx Stakes much more interesting.
Beiwacht could be particularly important to the shape of the race.
The four-year-old finished his previous preparation by winning the Group 1 All Aged Stakes and is unbeaten from two starts over 1400m.
From barrier four with Nash Rawiller aboard, he can roll forward and potentially control proceedings.
If he's allowed to dictate without being pressured, he could give this a big shake.
Lady Shenandoah is another fascinating Waller runner.
She hasn't won since completing the Surround Stakes-Coolmore Classic Group 1 double last year, but her subsequent form has remained strong.
Her Randwick record stands at three wins, three seconds and two thirds from nine starts, she's unbeaten over 1400m and barrier two gives Kerrin McEvoy the opportunity to conserve energy before producing her late.
At around the $20 mark in early betting, she's one of the more interesting runners underneath the favourites.
Then there is Gringotts, who finished second to Autumn Glow in the George Ryder before later finishing fourth behind Sheza Alibi in the Doncaster.
He's already crossed paths with both favourites and was impressive winning a recent trial, suggesting the seven-year-old hasn't lost his zest for racing.
Former Winx Stakes winner Fangirl returns as an eight-year-old after finishing fourth in the Stradbroke during the winter, while Aeliana brings her own serious Group 1 credentials having won both the Ranvet and Tancred Stakes.
Add Ceolwulf, Lindermann, Autumn Boy, Idle Flyer and the remaining runners and there is serious depth beyond the two headline mares.
How The Winx Stakes Could Be Run
Beiwacht and Lindermann look the natural candidates to push forward, while there are enough runners drawn wider to ensure they shouldn't get things entirely their own way.
That should create a genuine 1400m contest.
Autumn Glow looks beautifully placed from barrier three. McDonald can allow the speed to unfold before finding a position somewhere around midfield with cover.
Sheza Alibi has a slightly trickier problem despite drawing barrier one. If she settles behind horses, Nolen needs the gaps to appear at the right time.
Lady Shenandoah also draws to enjoy an economical run, while horses such as Gringotts and Fangirl are likely to be charging from further back if the leaders overdo things.
It's the sort of race where the pressure should build well before the 400m.
From there, class takes over.
The Big Question: Autumn Glow or Sheza Alibi?
On what they produced during the autumn, there might not be much between them at their absolute top.
Sheza Alibi's Randwick Guineas and Doncaster victories were exceptional.
She didn't scrape home in either, but gaps on rivals.
But Autumn Glow brings the stronger overall body of work.
Eleven consecutive victories to begin a career is extraordinary, and her record at Randwick and over 1400m makes Saturday's conditions close to perfect.
Her only defeat came when asked to stretch to 2000m.
Back to 1400m, fresh, drawn barrier three and with James McDonald aboard, there are very few holes to poke in her chances.
Sheza Alibi is the obvious danger and the most exciting part is that Saturday might only be the beginning of their rivalry.
