Only one Australian-trained Melbourne Cup winner over the past decade hasn’t raced on Turnbull Stakes day.

That is how important Saturday’s meeting at Flemington is with respect to the big one on the first Tuesday in November.

Tips for the Turnbull Stakes

 7. Osipenko (6) $7.00

Closed off strongly in the Makybe Diva Stakes, with his late splits comparable to MR BRIGHTSIDE.

He won the Frank Packer Plate over 2000m during Sydney’s autumn. That race has an impressive honour roll with plenty going on to bigger and better things.

Likely to settle a tad closer than what the map above has him and if this favourite doesn’t turn up, the $7 will look generous.

 

 4. Francesco Guardie (7) $21.00

He was second-up off nearly a year break and four weeks between runs, when a gallant fifth in the Makybe Diva Stakes.

Has to improve more than OSIPENKO and therefore the $21 looks a luxury.
