It might be one of the smaller Group 1 Toorak Handicap fields we’ve seen, but this year’s edition shapes as a fascinating game of tactical chess.

Sepals commands favouritism after doing everything right from a wide draw to land the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes last start over 1400m.

He’s drawn far better here, but perhaps sits a touch under the odds given Angel Capital, the greatest moral torched in a Group 1 in years, finished just over a length behind him.

The mile is no issue for Sepals, who maps perfectly to land in the box seat.

But he’s been asked to carry 5kg more, which could prove the leveller.

While it’s not a vintage Toorak field, the smaller 11-horse lineup adds a tactical edge.

Expect the pressure to build from the 600m, and there are a couple of runners that look significantly over the odds.

Toorak Handicap 2025 Tips & Best Bets

Track Conditions

A Good 4 surface with the rail in the True position should ensure a fair contest.

Look for winners to edge a touch wider as the day goes on, but no major bias anticipated.

Who do the All-In boys like the Toorak?

Speed Map

The tempo looks moderate early, with Evaporate and Desert Lightning likely to roll forward from adjacent gates.

Sepals gets the dream run tucked in behind the speed, with Transatlantic outside and Lazzura midfield but ready to strike.

Further back sit Damask Rose and Leica Lucy, while Willydoit anchors the field.

The Favourite

Sepals is again well placed, but faces a tougher task under 5kg more at the weights.

He’ll get every chance, but there’s one mare who looks perfectly poised to spoil the party.

Neil’s Best Bet: Lazzura $6.00

A progressive mare flying under the radar.

Lazzura is unbeaten this prep, winning up to Group 2 level and doing it with authority each time.

She was dominant, sweeping home to beat a deep Group 3 field at Randwick, then proved it was no fluke with another classy win in the Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington.

The step up to 1600m looks ideal, she’s perfectly weighted on 56kg and she maps to stalk Sepals every step of the way.

If she gets clear running from the 600m, she can go straight past them.

The Dangers

  • Sepals $3.70 – Genuine and well drawn; just needs to handle the extra weight.

  • Damask Rose $16.00 – Huge run late in the Sir Rupert Clarke and looks ready for the mile.

  • Evaporate $5.50 – Tough on-pacer who loves this trip and will give a bold sight.

  • Willydoit $19.00 – Five weeks between runs but dripping in class; a knockout hope late.

Neil’s Top Five

  1. Lazzura
  2. Sepals
  3. Damask Rose
  4. Evaporate
  5. Willydoit
