Horse Racing Tips for the Stradbroke Handicap 2026

Beware of the Splash Back

A capacity field, a rain-affected Eagle Farm surface and a wide-open betting market.
That's the recipe for one of the most challenging Stradbroke Handicaps in recent years.
The Winter Carnival's premier handicap has attracted quality from every angle, with proven Group 1 performers, emerging stars and seasoned wet-track specialists all converging on Eagle Farm for 1400 metres.
Finding the winner won't be easy.
In a race where luck in running often proves just as important as talent, securing clear air from the 600m onwards could be the difference between victory and a hard-luck story.
With the rail pushed out and significant traffic expected throughout the day, I expect the decisive moves to come away from the inside and through the middle of the track in the straight.
Track Conditions
• Expected Surface: Soft 7 (improving from Heavy range)
• Rail Position: +4m
• Weather: Rain easing leading into raceday
The inside section of the track has taken plenty of punishment throughout the carnival and with the rail moved out further again, I expect jockeys to gradually work away from the fence as the meeting progresses.
By Stradbroke time, I want horses building momentum through the centre and wider lanes.

Speed Map & Race Shape
Leaders
Transatlantic looks the likely horse to roll forward from a wide gate and either find the lead or sit outside it.
Spicy Martini, Regal Award and Tuned all have enough natural speed to settle prominently, while Private Eye should secure a perfect stalking position from his draw.
Midfield
Another Wil, Desert Lightning and Sepals all profile to settle just behind the speed.
Headley Grange should land in a comfortable midfield position, while Abounding and Yellow Brick may be forced to work from wider barriers.
Backmarkers
Fangirl, Splash Back, Warnie, King Of Roseau and Estadio Mestalla are all expected to settle in the second half of the field and rely on tempo and clear running.
Race Shape
While there isn't an abundance of outright speed, there is enough pressure engaged to ensure this becomes a genuine contest.
Several runners drawn wide will be searching for positions early and that should ensure the tempo remains honest.
The race looks ideally suited to horses capable of building through their gears from midfield or worse, particularly if the track continues to favour runners away from the fence.
The Favourite – Headley Grange
Headley Grange enters the race off a deserved Group 1 victory in the Kingsford Smith Cup and naturally finds himself towards the top of betting.
The performance was excellent and the switch back to handicap conditions only strengthens his claims.
He drops 4kg from that victory, handles wet ground and has already proven himself at the distance.
The query isn't ability.
It's price.
In a race as competitive as this, shorter odds are difficult to get excited about, even for a horse with his credentials.
That said, he's clearly one of the leading chances.
Neil's Best Bet – Splash Back
The value in the race sits with Splash Back.
She continues to race like a mare capable of winning a race of this quality and the setup looks ideal.
Her performance two starts ago on heavy ground confirmed she thrives when conditions are testing and her closing effort in the Kingsford Smith Cup suggested she's right on track for this assignment.
The handicap conditions are a major positive.
She drops 5kg from her latest run and gets back to a scenario where she can utilise her finishing burst.
With a 40 per cent winning strike rate and proven wet-track credentials, she profiles as one of the most underrated runners in the field.
At the current quote, she appeals as outstanding value.
The Dangers
Headley Grange ($6)
Comes off a Group 1 win, drops in weight and has a terrific record on rain-affected ground. Deserves his place near the top of the market.
Fangirl ($7.50)
Her run in the Kingsford Smith Cup was full of merit after charging home from the back. The obvious question is whether the track retains too much moisture.
Desert Lightning ($36)
One of the forgotten runners. Was beaten less than two lengths in the Kingsford Smith Cup, drops significantly in weight and maps to enjoy a much softer run. Looks enormous odds.
Another Wil ($16)
Building nicely into the campaign and profiles to peak third-up. The drop in weight and return to 1400m both suit.
Neil Evans' Top Five
1. Splash Back
2. Headley Grange
3. Fangirl
4. Desert Lightning
5. Another Wil
The Stradbroke rarely unfolds exactly as expected, but if the race is run genuinely and the track plays as anticipated, Splash Back looks ideally placed to capitalise.
With the right run and clear air at the top of the straight, she can deliver at excellent each-way odds in Queensland's biggest handicap.
