What an intriguing tactical battle the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield shapes up to be.

This is traditionally the point where many of the spring's established stars return to the races, and this year's weight-for-age field has delivered exactly that.

All bar two of the 12 runners are first-up, which makes assessing fitness and intent every bit as important as exposed form.

Cosmic Crusader arrives with race fitness and chases a third straight victory, while the enormously talented but sometimes wayward Angel Capital is the other runner with a start already under his belt this preparation.

Then there is the powerful Chris Waller presence, with five runners representing the stable in a race where several of his bigger spring contenders are using 1400m as their launching pad.

With so many runners resuming, the trials and jump-outs provide some clues, but this race is going to come down to tactics:

How cheaply can Beiwacht control the speed?
When does the pressure go on?
And on a soft Caulfield track, will the race develop early enough to give the big finishers their opportunity?

There are plenty of questions to answer, but one mare gets the right setup to strike first-up.

Neil Evans' Group 1 Memsie Stakes Preview 2026

Track Conditions

Caulfield was sitting at a Soft 7 through Thursday and into Friday, but with clearer weather around, I'm expecting an improvement to at least the Soft 6 range by Saturday.

The rail moves out 4m after being in the True position a fortnight ago.

That should produce relatively even racing early in the meeting, although as the day progresses I expect riders to start searching for better ground further away from the inside.

By the time we get to the Memsie, don't be surprised if the preferred lanes are starting to emerge closer to the middle of the track.

The Speed Map

Beiwacht looks the natural leader and should roll forward from his middle barrier.

Mr Brightside can work across and settle just behind the speed, while Treasurethe Moment should be able to tuck in behind that pair and potentially land the run of the race.

That's important because there doesn't appear to be enormous pressure on paper.

Tom Kitten can settle around midfield from his inside draw, with Angel Capital and Autumn Boy likely to find positions around him.

From there, we get into the horses who will need the race to unfold in their favour.

Jimmysstar should drift into the second half, while Cosmic Crusader is likely to go back from his wide barrier.

Sabaj also draws wide and should settle in the second half, with Birdman likely to get even further back.

Planet Red can settle in the final third and Buckaroo should naturally find himself towards the tail.

The big tactical question is what happens once they get beyond the halfway mark.

If Beiwacht gets a cheap sectional, the riders behind him simply can't afford to wait until the straight. I expect the pressure to start building well before the turn.

The Favourite – Jimmysstar

Jimmysstar opened as the market elect and there's no doubting his quality, but at anything shorter than around $5.50, I'm prepared to look elsewhere.

His fresh record is excellent with four wins from seven attempts and he has always been highly effective when there's some give in the ground.

His two Sydney trials have also been encouraging and the barrier should allow him to get to the outside when the serious racing begins.

But this is a hot Memsie Stakes.

He's now a seven-year-old returning against a field containing several high-class horses, and there's a chance he simply needs the run before producing his absolute best deeper into the campaign.

He's a major winning chance, but $4.40 looks short enough.

The Dangers

Angel Capital ($8.00) is the runner with the most explosive acceleration in the field.

There was plenty wrong with his first-up performance in the Group 2 Missile Stakes and he now comes to Melbourne with that run under his belt. If Caulfield continues to dry, his turn of foot becomes an even bigger weapon.

Jimmysstar ($4.40) still demands enormous respect. His fresh record speaks for itself, the trials have been good and he should get his chance to build momentum out wide.

Beiwacht ($5.50) could be the runner everyone regrets allowing to get too comfortable. He possesses terrific cruising speed and if he controls the middle stages without being pressured, he'll take plenty of catching.

Autumn Boy ($10.00) gets a lovely first-up setup. He draws to find cover around midfield, handles soft ground extremely well and should conserve plenty for the business end.

And don't dismiss Tom Kitten ($21.00) at a big price.

His fresh form is strong and the blinkers coming off is a key change. If the inside remains competitive later in the meeting, his draw becomes a genuine advantage and he can run a much bigger race than those odds suggest.

Neil's Best Bet – Treasurethe Moment ($8.50)

I'm with Treasurethe Moment to return with a bang.

She's still a lightly raced mare with plenty of upside, has an excellent record fresh and is unbeaten from three starts on soft ground.

Her two jump-outs have been typically quiet, but that's no concern heading into her return.

The biggest attraction is the map.

While several of her key rivals are likely to settle midfield or worse, Treasurethe Moment should be able to land just behind Beiwacht and Mr Brightside without having to burn unnecessary energy.

From there, she can control her own destiny.

On what looks a moderate tempo, I want to see her building momentum from around the 550m rather than waiting for the big closers to wind up.

If she can put them under pressure approaching the turn, she has the tactical speed to pinch the break before the likes of Angel Capital and Jimmysstar get into full stride.

At around $8.50, Treasurethe Moment is my best bet in the Memsie Stakes.
