Horse Racing Tips for the Melbourne Cup 2025

Neil crowns a new Cup King

A bit of rain on the radar, a powerful UK and Irish invasion and several in-form locals ready to make their mark.
This year’s Melbourne Cup shapes as a truly international staying test where grit, timing and adaptability could decide the winner.
It’s a Cup with genuine depth.
Proven European stayers meet emerging local talent and for the first time in years, there’s a sense that the race might still be there to be won at the 200m mark.
What should help punters is that so many runners bring strong formlines through the Caulfield Cup, which again looks the key lead-up.
Amid all the global intrigue, two horses stand out as the right mix of timing, setup and value heading into the big two miles at Flemington.

Track Conditions
A firm Good 3/4 in the lead-up is likely to soften right up, with heavy rain forecast across Monday and further showers expected on Cup Day.
We could be racing on a Soft 6 or even 7, which will bring more runners into play and make this year’s edition an open affair.
Speed Map
Expect Smokin’ Romans to roll forward and take control, with River Of Stars pushing across from wide to settle in the first few.
Just behind them sits Onesmoothoperator and Vauban, who maps perfectly from an inside draw.
Changingoftheguard will be caught a touch wide early before looking to slot in.
The likes of Absurde, Presage Nocturne, Buckaroo, and Meydaan should all find spots around midfield, while Valiant King, Half Yours and Royal Supremacy settle slightly worse than midfield with cover.
Backmarkers such as Al Riffa and Flatten The Curve will be saving their runs for late, hoping the speed up front brings them into the race.
The Favourite
Half Yours has quickly stamped himself as one of Australia’s brightest staying prospects.
From a dominant Listed win in July to a polished Caulfield Cup victory as favourite, he’s done little wrong and deserves his spot atop the market.
He’s drawn to get an economical run just behind the midfield and carries only half a kilo more than he did at Caulfield.
The question now is whether he can stretch that brilliance to a true two miles against battle-hardened European stayers.
At around the $6.50 mark, he’s a deserved favourite, but far from unbeatable.
Neil’s Best Bet
Valiant King ($9.00)
Lightly weighted, perfectly timed and fourth-up into his grand final.
This six-year-old looks set to run a monster race.
His Caulfield Cup effort was much better than it appeared, working home strongly from well back in a race that didn’t suit.
From a middle gate, he’ll drift back again, but if the tempo is genuine and he gets clear air at the 600m, expect him to launch late.
The right profile, the right setup, and the right price.
The Dangers
-
Absurde ($26.00) – Massive value. Proven two-miler who was luckless last year and building nicely through the Caulfield Cup.
-
Al Riffa ($9.50) – Genuine Group 1 Irish form, including a dominant Irish St Leger win. Big threat if he handles the conditions.
-
Half Yours ($6.50) – Hard to knock his winning form and preparation; will be in the finish again if he stays the trip.
-
Meydaan ($19.00) – The sleeper from the UK. Stripped fitter after the Caulfield Cup and nicely weighted for this.
Neil’s Top Five
- Valiant King
- Absurde
- Al Riffa
- Half Yours
- Meydaan
With the weather set to play its hand and international raiders arriving in force, this Melbourne Cup has the makings of a genuine staying war.
Expect a wide-open finish and don’t be surprised if the winner comes from beyond midfield with a well-timed surge down the famous Flemington straight.
