A tactical game of weight-for-age chess awaits in the Champions Mile this Saturday at Flemington.

A genuine clash of class between some of the best milers in the country.

Now deep into their spring campaigns, every runner is rock-hard fit.

While the track will be showing the effects of a long Cup Week, this race promises to be all about toughness, tempo and timing.

Even though it’s the third last of the 38 Cup Carnival races, expect the winner to come from on or near the speed.

Much will depend on how bold the leaders are early and whether Pride Of Jenni or Mr Brightside, both fourth-up and at peak fitness, can control the race from the front.

Neil Evans’ Champions Mile 2025 Preview

Track Conditions

After a week of racing and more rain forecast in the 24 hours prior, the Good 4 surface from Oaks Day will likely deteriorate.

Expect the track to settle in the Soft 6 to Soft 7 range, with the chance of dipping into heavy territory by the last few races.

Speed Map

From a low draw, Empire Rose heroine Pride Of Jenni will roll straight to the front again, looking to dictate terms.

Treasurethe Moment gets the dream run tucked in behind, while Mr Brightside is likely to slide across and sit outside the leader.

Pericles lands midfield along with Steffi Magnetica, who’ll hug the rail.

Further back sit Ceolwulf, Lake Forest, Leica Lucy, and Von Hauke.

All in striking range if the speed slackens.

The wildcard is Steparty, drawn wide and capable of either pressing on or dropping in for cover.

The Favourite - Pride Of Jenni $4.20

After a dazzling win in the Empire Rose, Pride Of Jenni again commands respect.

Her record at the mile is outstanding and her racing style continues to break hearts.

But this is a different tactical test.

She’ll have both Mr Brightside and Treasurethe Moment close enough to pounce, and a rain-affected surface may dull her turn of foot.

At $4.20 she looked value early, but if the track worsens $5.50+ might be the right play.

Neil’s Best Bet – Treasurethe Moment $6.50

Dropping back from a strong Cox Plate effort, this looks the perfect setup for Treasurethe Moment.

She maps beautifully behind Pride Of Jenni, with Mr Brightside offering cover to her outside.

If the inside holds up, she’ll stalk the leaders into the straight and peel out with a powerful finishing burst.

She’s three from three on soft ground, and this is her time to strike.

The Dangers

  • Pride Of Jenni – Back to her brilliant best and could simply run them ragged again if left alone in front.

  • Mr Brightside – Brave in the King Charles III from a wide draw. Loves the mile (13 from 24 wins) and ready to peak.

  • Ceolwulf – Blinkers sparked him last start, but that may have been his grand final.

  • Lake Forest – Forgive the King Charles run; his prior mile form was much stronger.

Neil’s Top Five

  1. Treasurethe Moment

  2. Pride Of Jenni

  3. Mr Brightside

  4. Ceolwulf

  5. Lake Forest
