The time-honoured Group 1 Caulfield Guineas has arrived, a race that used to be the pinnacle for 3-year-olds in Australasia.

However, in recent years, the spotlight seems to have shifted toward Sydney's Golden Rose

This year, with Golden Rose winner Broadsiding installed as the odds-on favourite, it feels like that trend is widening even further.

But is the Caulfield Guineas as straightforward as it seems on paper?

The short answer is yes.

Early markets reflect this, with only two runners under $10 and a significant gap to the rest of the field.

Six of the 11 horses are priced at $20 or longer, suggesting the dominance of Broadsiding.

Comparisons to The Autumn Sun's crushing 2018 Guineas win are inevitable, where the star colt circled the field and won easily despite a wide trip.

However, some runners appear valuable, even if it's to fill out your exotics.

It’s the classic tale of a "Goliath" favourite versus a field of "Davids."

Caulfield Guineas 2024 Tips and Best Bets

Track Conditions

I expect a Good 4 to start the meeting, with the rail in the true position.

This should provide even racing early in the day, with on-speed runners benefiting slightly in the dry conditions.

However as the track wears in, we may see winners coming from a bit wider out and further back later in the day.

Who do the All-In Boys like in the Caulfield Guineas

The Speed Map

Wanaruah ($19.00) from the Waterhouse-Bott stable is expected to take up the running.

Stablemate and Golden Rose placegetter Mayfair ($8.00) will sit in just behind along with Feroce ($56.00) from a good draw.

In behind that group, Rue De Royale ($67.00), Public Attention ($23.00), and Private Life ($16.00) will form the next line of runners.

Evaporate ($10.50), chasing a fifth straight win, will likely settle just off the pace alongside Angel Capital ($9.50), who is searching for a hat-trick of wins.

Broadsiding will settle towards the rear but should get a perfect run off the fence with cover.

From there, it’s a simple game plan. Move into the race three-wide with cover from the 700m, then unleash his powerful sprint down the straight.

The Favourite

Broadsiding is the one to beat, and it all comes down to what price you're comfortable backing him at.

Early markets had him around $1.55, but I’d be more inclined to back him at $1.75 if you can find that.

Neil's Best Bet

Barring bad luck or an unforeseen incident, Broadsiding should win this.

For value, consider Quinella plays with Angel Capital, a horse I hold in high regard.

You can also play the Trifecta and First Four, standing out Broadsiding and boxing Evaporate, Angel Capital, and Mayfair behind him.

Neil's Top Four

  1. Broadsiding
  2. Angel Capital
  3. Mayfair
  4. Evaporate
