Recent history points to a last-start winner in this year’s Caulfield Cup.

Four of the last five winners of the $5 million 2400m feature have won their lead-up run.

Best Solution [2018] and Mer De Glace [2019] both won their respective international lead-ups while Incentivise [2020] and Verry Elleegant [2021] took out the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before capturing the first of Melbourne’s big three.

Last year’s winner, Durston, finished 6th in the Metropolitan Hcp but won the Wyong and Newcastle Cups in his two previous runs.

It’s clear in recent times you need recent winning form for a Caulfield Cup

Jockey to Follow

He rides Gold Trip in the Caulfield Cup, who is looking to become the third horse in five years to complete the Turnbull Stakes – Caulfield Cup double

Tips for the Caulfield Cup

Gold Trip 1. Gold Trip (11) $5.00

Finished 2nd in this race last year and is coming off one of his career-best performances winning the Turnbull Stakes.

Gets an in-form Ben Melham to steer and should find a bum to take him into the race.

Montefillia 4. Montefilia (9) $17.00

Found the winner's circle last start after 80 weeks in the wilderness.

She won the Hill Stakes clocking the 5th best last 200m of the day.

She was beaten 1L in this race last year and meets Gold Trip 2kg better.

Great each-way play.
