This year's Caulfield Cup appears to be down on quality, however it still presents an interesting betting proposition for punters with a wide-open field. And with a high-stakes ($5 million) purse riders will be looking to try anything to win.

The early tempo looks key here and with a possible "crawling" pace, a few of these horses will need to be ridden outside their normal pattern and comfort zone.

I'm with a high-quality galloper who had genuine excuses last start at Flemington, where it was very hard to make up ground on the leaders.

Track Assessment

The Caulfield track is currently rated a Heavy 10 with the rail out 6m for the entire circuit.

Showers are predicted today and tomorrow in Melbourne, and there is a chance we have rain during the card.

The Caulfield surface can throw up significantly advantaged racing patterns, and with the rail out 6m, on-speed typically holds some advantage.

However if the rain continues, swooping wider on the track may be the place to be.

The Map Speed Map

Knights Order (18) should have no problems bouncing straight to the front with no noted early speed elsewhere in this field. However, when they are racing for the big money tactics can change and there could be a surprise challenger.

Gold Trip (12), Numerian (10) and Smokin Romans (5) can all push up to race in the first half of the field. Smokin Romans could sit outside the leader.

Benaud (20) and Duais (9) both will be looking to find cover midfield.

Chapada (11), Sound (4) and Inspirational Girl (1) are all likely to race rearward and require a decent tempo to be getting home hard over the top.

The Favourites Horse Racing

Smokin Romans ($5.00) came out and won unexpectedly ($21) in the Turnbull over 2000m.

He drops right down in the weights here to carry only 51.5kg.

The stable have always had a high opinion of him and he has overcome some stress/weight issues to be a different horse this preparation.

He will place himself right in the firing line (in the first pair) and from that position will prove awfully hard to beat.

Analysis and Tips Horse Racing Tip

I'm with Duais who was just too good last prep to ignore and strikes a weak Caulfield Cup field here.

She looks to be building nicely and had genuine excuses last start at Flemington, where it appeared to be a leader-biased track and she could not make up the ground.

Fitter now and on a fairer track, she is the big improver at odds.

Smokin Romans was the one they could not get past in the Turnbull (2000m) last start and whilst he was blessed on that day due to the track bias, he will again receive some on-speed favours.

The stable has finally been able to put weight on him after the horse suffered stress-related issues.

He could receive a cheap lead and simply kick off the front.

Alegron won well at Randwick last start in the Group 3 Kingston Town over 2000m.

He is only third-up for this assignment and may have more improvement than others.

Godolphin can do no wrong at the moment and have their horses flying!

Nonconformist comes out of the absolute A-Grade WFA company, where in recent runs lined up against the likes of Anamoe, Zaaki and Alligator Blood.

He will certainly find this easier and is now rock hard fit.
