The Autumn Carnival kicks off in Sydney this weekend with 6 massive group races.

The rail goes in the true position and should give every runner their chance, with races dictated by tempo.

Mick Gannon and Luke Hovhanesian have nailed down on their top picks in the features.

Race 4 - Skyline Stakes #2 Shaggy $2.30

Shaggy brought Queensland form into the Pierro Plate and was an understandable market drifter, easing to $7.50 at the jump.

Despite the lack of betting support, he proved far too strong, putting 2.2 lengths on Comedy while former Golden Slipper favourite Pallaton finished 3.1L behind him.

While he drew well and the race setup suited him, he also raced in the inferior going, which adds significant merit to his performance.

If he repeats that effort he should be right in the finish again and with a favourable speed map, he’s expected to be hard to run down.

Race 6 - Guy Walter Stakes #1 Amelia's Jewel $2.35

Amelia’s Jewel has been working her way back to top form after switching stables and showed signs of getting back to her career-best at the end of her first prep for her new trainers.

She arrives here off the back of two impressive trials suggesting she’s primed to go fresh and with James McDonald booked, she becomes a very easy bet to have on Saturday.

With a race lacking early pace, she should be able to land forward of midfield, and from there, expect her to unleash her customary turn of foot and prove too classy for her rivals.

Race 5 - Sweet Embrace Stakes

The Sweet Embrace Stakes looks to be an open and competitive affair, with several chances in the field.

The favourite Bellazaine will be hard to beat but from a betting perspective, there’s far better value available at big prices.

#8 Karinska $21.00

Karinska made an impressive debut at Canterbury, winning despite severe traffic issues.

She was strung up for most of the straight and only found clear air in the final 100m, yet still managed to launch late and get the win.

Her recent quiet trial suggests she’s come through that run well and if she takes the expected natural improvement second-up, she can be highly competitive here from a soft draw.

#9 Marhoona $21.00

Another big value runner, Marhoona attracted solid market support on debut and did a super job chasing a hot tempo before letting down strongly to reel in the leaders.

The early speed in that race was brutal, making her effort even more impressive and she will only improve off the back of that performance.

From a good draw, she maps to get an ideal trip in transit and could be right in the finish at a huge price.

Race 7 - Surround Stakes #2 Lady Of Camelot $4.50

The market has overreacted to the last-start win of Lady Shenandoah.

Last time out, Lady Of Camelot was just as strong, despite having to overcome early setbacks.

She half-missed the start, forcing her to use up energy early to muster into position, which ultimately took its toll late in the race.

This time, she maps to get the perfect run, likely settling just behind her stablemate, who will roll forward and take up the lead.

With a softer run in transit, she will be much stronger late and it wouldn’t be surprising to see a bit of tactical teamwork from the Waterhouse & Bott stable to ensure she gets every chance of success.

At the current odds, she looks a far better value play than the favourite.
