After the gripping battles witnessed in the Memsie and Moir Stakes over the past two weeks, this Saturday’s Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington promises to be another enthralling contest.

The country’s finest middle-distance gallopers are set to clash, with Via Sistina, Mr Brightside, and Pride Of Jenni leading the charge.

Adding more intrigue, the shock winner of the Memsie, Pinstriped, will look to continue his rise and upset the favourites once again.

All signs point to a ripping race on Saturday afternoon.

Makybe Diva Stakes 2024 Tips and Best Bets

Track Conditions:

The Flemington track is currently rated as a Good 4, with a rail position in the true.

However, with rain predicted for Saturday morning and afternoon, it could shift to a Soft 5 by the time race 8 takes place.

I expect all runners will get their fair chance, ensuring a level playing field.

The Speed Map

There are no surprises when it comes to who will take up the front-running position.

Pride Of Jenni (Barrier 7) will look to dictate the pace from the front, while Mr Brightside (Barrier 4) will lead the chasing pack.

Hot favourite and Winx Stakes winner Via Sistina (Barrier 1) usually settles back in the field, but James McDonald will get her more forward to ensure she doesn’t get caught behind too many runners.

Multiple Group 1 performer Atishu (Barrier 5) should sit midfield, close enough to strike.

Ben Allen will have a decision to make aboard Pinstriped (Barrier 8) from the wide barrier but I suspect he will bite the bullet and look to get across and settle behind the runners above.

At the back, stayers like Circle Of Fire (Barrier 2) and Warmonger (Barrier 3) will likely bide their time, waiting for the final stretch to make their move.

The Favourite - Via Sistina $2.30

This daughter of Fastnet Rock was written off first-up in the Winx Stakes over 1400m but she sprouted wings late to get the job done at $11.00.

Now she comes into this contest at the mile second-up at $2.30.

Despite her undeniable ability, the shift in the market seems exaggerated given she is now against the best horses in the country.

It’s a massive over-reaction and while there is no doubting her superstar ability, she’s just far too short in a field of this quality.

James McDonald passes up a great book of rides in Sydney to get on board this mare and she does map well if he looks to get a bit closer from barrier 1.

She goes well second-up (5:2-2-0) and there is no denying her quality but I'm in strong denial of the ridiculously short price she finds herself at in this.

Tips

1st – Pride Of Jenni ($6.50)

There are doubts over her current form after a lackluster return, but Pride Of Jenni has the potential to bounce back.

This warhorse led the field to victory in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes earlier this year and loves to dominate from the front.

Second-up, she has an impressive record (7:2-3-1), and I’m backing her to rediscover her best form.

At $6.50, she offers great value for punters looking for an upset.

2nd – Via Sistina ($2.30)

The favourite has the class to win but is far too short in the market for a race of this caliber.

Her impressive turn of foot could get her across the line, but she’ll need everything to fall into place, especially from the inside barrier.

A top-three finish looks certain, but she might struggle to outlast a rejuvenated Pride Of Jenni.

Mr Brightside

3rd – Mr Brightside ($3.40)

The ultra-consistent Mr Brightside was superb when finishing second in the Memsie Stakes and boasts a terrific second-up record (6:4-1-0).

However at $3.40, he’s a touch short given the strength of this field.

I still expect him to be in the finish alongside the two favourites, fighting hard for a top-three spot.

4th – Atishu ($15.00)

At long odds, Atishu could be the value runner for those looking to add some spice to their exotics.

Her second-up form (8:3-2-0) is impressive, and she’ll be making good ground late.

While it’s unlikely she’ll topple the top trio, a minor placing isn’t out of reach in this competitive field.
