Luke's Horse Racing Longshots for Randwick

Race 7 #9 Long Genes $101.00/$17.00

While forgotten by the market, this 3YO colt is a good chance of running a bottler here in the Randwick feature.

Last start performance

Last start at Randwick in the Group 3 Gloaming, he put in a sneaky run along the rail that appears missed by plenty.

He jumped well from a wide barrier but got squeezed out of the early speed battle by his rivals.

He was pushed back to last along the rails and was forced to stay there the entire race.

They went a really slow tempo in the event with Raf Attack dictating to the field from the front.

From that position he was never a winning chance, however when they swung the bend he took all the short cuts to put himself in contention.

He started to let down well before shifting off heels at the 200m mark when 'Snowman' changed lanes.

He was good through the line and the step up here to 2000m seems ideal.

Breeding

The breeding of Long Genes not only suggests he will be excel in this race but rather the Derby in a few weeks time.

His father 'US Navy Flag' was a strong 1400-1600m horse, winning and placing in multiple Group 1's over this distance.

His mother Fanatic (NZ) was an out and out stayer.

She was the winner of the G1 NZ Oaks over 2400m and was last seen on a race track winning the Group 2 Adelaide Cup over 3200m.

Much like her son, rather than a sharp turn of foot what she excelled at was grinding runners down.

Unlike in the Gloaming, If they go hard in this years' Spring Champion Long Genes' breeding suggests he will continue to run on solid splits over the whole 2000m.

It is just crucial he doesn't get too far back in the run.

Extra Futures Play

While he represents immense value here in the feature each way, it is also worth nibbling him for the Victoria Derby in 10 days time at $61.

Race 9 #1 Namesake $12.00/$3.00

This talented Maurice colt can bounce back hard here third up from a spell.

Last Start Performance

He got completely lost last start at Rosehill when being restrained back to the rear of the field.

He really struggled to sit and sprint, and while excuses can be made over the final 100m he was never picking up the winner King's Gambit.

That was a very talented field and while this is also a Group 2 event, this field has plenty of holes in it.

His historial racing pattern shows that when he settles in the top 4 he can match it with some very talented horses.

From barrier 8 it's crucial that positive tactics are used to either land the 1-1 or two pairs back.

Speed Map Favours

He has two absolute pocket rockets on his outside in barriers 9 and 10 in Flying Trapeze and The Little Pumper.

Both will cart across and if he can sit on their backs as they speed to the front he should land the box seat here.

There is very little pace inside him and granted there are no shock change of tactics, I doubt they will gas those underneath to match it with the pace outwide.

Race 10 #8 Bunker Hut $13.00/$3.20

This Michael Freedman trained runner can perform much better here from the kind gate.

Last Start Performance

It was a very brave run at Rosehill off a four week freshen up last start.

Jumping from barrier 7 he managed to find himself not only rearward but three wide the trip.

With minimal luck he was forced to swing very wide on the bend and stuck on well.

The good news is that the tough run should have brought him on and got him rock hard fit.

Go on his effort prior when he put a hole in his rivals in a midway.

He now rises to 1400m and gets the services of Jon Van Overmeire who continues to ride peaches.

Speed Map Favours

Much like the previously mentioned Namesake, Bunker Hut thrives from on speed positions.

If you put a pen through his attempts at Group racing, he has at least placed in four of his five runs when settling in the top 5.

From the soft barrier he can hopefully punch up and land leaders back.

From there he just needs clear running to be in the finish.
