When Geelong Cup day arrives it does remind us we are very close to Melbourne Cup week, with some of these stayers still having a chance to make the big day in November.
There are some high-quality staying types engaged in this year's edition, and whilst most are exposed following runs in the Turnbull and Bart Cummings, the betting is still wide open!
I'm backing a Sydney-based raider and believe these form lines will prove stronger at the finish. He could be the forgotten horse after having genuine excuses last start when he over-raced in the Group 1 Metropolitan.
Looks big odds ($21) to my eye.
Track Conditions
The Geelong track is currently rated a Soft 7 with the rail True for the entire circuit. Fine conditions are predicted for race day.
With no significant rain forecast and the rail in the True, expect the Geelong surface to play fair with both on and off speed at no disadvantage.
Geelong Race 8 - Geelong Cup 2400m (Group 3, Handicap)
The Map
Serpentine (13) and Herman Hesse (2) are the two most likely to roll forward with Serpentine favoured to win the premier spot and lead. Although I don't expect a warp speed here.
San Huberto (19), La Dragontea (9), Aurora's Symphony (8) and Grove Ferry (3) can all push up to race in the first half of the field. San Huberto could be forced to press on from the outside.
Luncies (16) and Surefire (6) both will be looking to find cover midfield.
Makram (18), Attorney (12) and Midnight Blue (2) are all likely to race rearward and require a decent tempo to be getting home hard over the top.

The Favourite
Interpretation ($4.40) has a great platform now with 2 solid runs over the 2500m.
He was good last start in the Group 3 Bart Cummings at Flemington, where a close up 3rd of 11 and only beaten a length.
I'd expect the rider to press forward knowing he is on a very fit horse, and those tactics should have them close to the speed and in an ideal striking position.
Best Racing Tips
I'm with Grove Ferry who comes via solid Sydney form lines at his past three starts.
Not all went to plan last time out in The Metropolitan when they crawled and forced him to over-race throughout.
The "edge" will now be knocked off him, and he can go forward and if he settles be very strong late.
Looks to be the forgotten horse at a price ($21).
Surefire has a touch of quality and is another that comes via what I view as the superior Sydney form-lines.
He has had the one run in Melbourne when raced well back in the Turnbull and never really had the opportunity to run on.
He will improve off that run and this is much easier than the Group 1 grade last time out.
Luncies is an interesting runner and had huge wraps on him when arriving from the UK some time ago.
He has always shown glimpses of high ability, and following the good run in the Turnbull (6 of 15) last start, this is possibly the prep he can put it all together.
A leading rider is booked!
Interpretation comes out of the Bart Cummings where showed plenty of grit to keep chasing all the way to/through the line.
That will top him off perfectly for this and if he is ridden closer, he will have a little more dash and stamina to be in the finish here.
