We have had some magnificent race days over the last few weeks, but it has all led to this. The peak of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Derby Day.
Grand Final Day for punters with an absolute feast of racing in Victoria at Flemington accompanied by the Golden Eagle race day at Rosehill.
Flemington plays host to a full race card of Group racing including three Group 1 races. The VRC Derby over 2500m, the Coolmore Stud Stakes up the Flemington straight over 1200m and the Empire Rose Stakes over the mile (1600m).
The Coolmore has been an excellent race for stud aspirants and there looks to be an abundance of them with those hopes in this field to go along with the $1.2million paid to the winner.
Track Conditions
The track at Headquarters is currently rated as a Soft 6 with the rail to be back in the true position after previously being out 9m.
This should see runners getting their chance to win from everywhere, and look for runners to go wide later in the day.
With more rain forecasted to fall between now and the end of race day, there is a strong chance we will be looking at a Heavy track despite the quality drainage at Flemington.

The Map
The likely track conditions will make this an enthralling tactical battle between jockeys on the day. It looks as though they will separate into two groups with one coming up the middle and the other down the outside rail closest to the Grandstands.
Springing out of the gates as they usually do and taking up the pace on the near side in a line of three (closest to grandstands) will be Coolangatta (13), Economics (14) and Best Of Bordeaux (17).
While Grand Impact (1), Custodian (3) and Doull (4) should make a line of three on-pace down the middle of the track.
The interesting one is 3YO filly Queen Of The Ball (8) who is drawn in the middle of the two likely groups. Suspecting that she will come across and join the group on the near side to potentially make a line of four setting the pace.
Look for Bews (2), Lofty Strike (5) and Meridius (6) to go across and slot in behind the leading division of three down the middle of the track, while Great Barrier Reef (7) and In Secret (9) will likely follow Queen Of The Ball.
The rest including strong winning chances Buenos Noches (15) and Jacquinot (16) will settle in behind the group on the near side.

The Favourite
In Secret ($3.70) comes into the Coolmore off a freshen-up since her superb run in defeat to Jacquinot in the Golden Rose.
She has had the one jump out up the Flemington straight, in a heat with most of this field in it, where she was ridden quiet and was asked for no effort to close.
She steps back in distance to the 1200m, where she previously won the Run To The Rose two starts back.
She also finished 2nd to Flight Stakes winner Zougotcha over the 1200m when first-up three starts back.
Maps to get a good run in the race off a hot tempo and will be storming home late.
History and Key Formlines
To make it difficult for punters to find the winner in this race, there has been a mix of form lines over the last decade that the winners of the past Coolmore race have come from.
- Only one horse has come out of the Everest and won it, with Home Affairs winning last year's edition.
- Only two have come out of the Golden Rose and won (Exceedance and Merchant Navy).
- Flying Artie did what Grand Impact is looking to do this year and back up a Blue Sapphire victory with a Coolmore Stud Stakes success.
- Three winners in a row came out of the Roman Consul with Zoustar, Brazen Beau and Gelding Japonisme doing so between 2013-2015. Best Of Bordeaux and Nettuno are looking to do this year with the former running in the Manikato since.
Best Racing Tips
Landed with the horse who has been set for this race over everything else in Buenos Noches from the Matthew Smith stable.
He comes out of the Poseidon Stakes (just like September Run did two years ago), where he was beaten in a photo finish by eventual Everest winner Giga Kick, and has claims to say it would have gone close in the Everest.
Maps well and should track into it perfectly with not only a hot speed, but also with many of the top chances in the race likely to be giving him a cart into the race on the near side.
Jacquinot is airborne after a scintillating Golden Rose win two starts back and holding his own well last start when running 5th in the Everest.
Should be in the right part of the track with the right horses and he will be flying home late alongside Buneos Noches.
In Secret will need a top ride by James McDonald to ensure she presents into the race and makes her run with the previous two mentioned, but J Mac is the man to trust to deliver the required ride to win in a big race.
Should see her coming home and be right in the finish while Best Of Bordeaux will stick on well up on-pace and be the best of the horses up on the speed.
1st Buenos Noches
2nd Jacquinot
3rd In Secret
4th Best Of Bordeaux
