In Sydney on Saturday it was RANDWICK and the track was GOOD-4. Rail was TRUE.
It seemed more difficult to make ground as the meeting went on. From race 4 there were seven races and in those races 5 x winners had the rails trail, one other led all the way.
RANDWICK
The G1 Epsom Hcp was Race 8 at 1600m and it was REDIENER who secured the coveted rails trail run and with 50kg. was able to peel off the back of the leader GOLDEN MILE and nail him late.
It was again the case of GOLDEN MILE, ironically, just feeling the pinch at the end of 1600m (his last 200m ranked 14th this race). He only juuuust gets the trip. YEs he was attacked 700m out (no help!) but he did get away with a 60.26 1st-1000m (1st-section -6L Vs G1 average) before kicking away, but yeah, was collared late.
Splitting these two was KOVALICA who was back off midfield after being touch slow into stride, he then weaved through to the outside and charged late running 11.34 last 200m (2nd-fastest of race/ 4th-fastest of day) just missed.
BARBIE’ SFOX was a very honest 4th (every chance) from DEMOCRACY MANIFEST who did look about ready to launch when his luck ran out late, he was race-fastest 400m-to-200m but with that late interference, only ranked 9th last 200m.
HOPE IN YOUR HEART was very wide yet still kept closing in terrific effort (11.52 home ranked 4th). MY OBERON ran home 11.56 (rank = 3rd) and THE INEVITABLE ranked first for last 200m splits with 11.28 after losing ground noticeably 600m-to-4000, and was somehow back with the tail.
I suspect they would want that ride over again! Winner’s time: 1-34.26 was -4.6L Vs G1 class average.
The G1 Flight Stks was Race 6 for 3YOF and this was also over 1600m.
TROPICAL SQUALL went straight to the front and did not loaf! She ran 58.68 1st-1000m so, she would have been leading Golden Mile in The Epsom by some 7-8L with 600m run, she still gave a strong kick putting up 3L before holding off KIMOCHI (had rails trail) near 1L on the line.
KIMOCHI chased hard and was clear second here form TUTTA LA VITA who was well back early, improved to the outside but still 6L off them straightening, she kept closing, her final 3 x 200m splits ranked (2nd, 2nd, 5th - 12.12 last 200m).
MOLLYNICKERS was also well back, she seemed to race tight and couldn’t quicken at the vital stage and TUTTA LA VITA put-up 2L on her, once outside (some 275m from home) she flew and was the only filly to break 12-seconds last 200m (she ran 11.90).
CAPTAIN AMELIA was back with her, she did quicken and made a burst strongly before peaking late. Her sectional rankings back this up too (ranked 1st, 1st, 6th last 200m).
PRIVATE LEGACY and MISS JOELENE battled strongly late and ranked 2nd and 3rd home respectively. That early speed was +5.4L Vs class (1st-600m) and overall Time: 1-33.91 was +3.7L Vs class.
JUST FINE won the third G1 and R9 was the Metrop Hcp at 2400m. He had the rails trail and just 50kg and once he peeled off the leader’s back, SPIRIT RIDGE, it looked like ‘’how far’’? He was able to wear said leader down and broke the track record doing it running 2-26.11 for 2400m. They are talking Melbourne Cup’s but to my eye, even though he ran the time here, he looks a risk at 3200m? Still, it is difficult to second guess this stable.
The quinella here had 4.3L on third, KALAPOUR who ran home nicely into 3rd beating MILITARY MISSION narrowly for that end of the price. BENAUD was honest but very dour. Early speed here +9.4L Vs class, overall time +4L.
The Premiere Stks was R7 and a G2 at WFA. THINK ABOUT IT just keeps winning! He had the gun run behind the modest tempo with LOST AND RUNNING going 35.10 1st-600m which was -7L Vs class average. Winner went through underneath and held off HAWAII FIVE OH who was back, saved for one run, clear outside and rushed late running 11.22 (day’s fastest) last 200m.
BELLA NIPOTINA followed the winner and stayed in, she kept chasing in there but they just held her again that last bit. T
hese three had 2L on ALCOHOL FREE who battled well (4th-fastest last 200m) and they went by ZAPATEO who is better ridden colder than that, in my humble. Time: 1-8.7 was -3.8L Vs class average.
AIRMAN won the last BM94/ 1200m running 1-9.10 off 35.16 1st-600m, he was the only winner after R4 that didn't lead OR have rails trail.
He ran 33.48 last 600m (+6l Vs class and 4/100ths slower than Think About It in G2) and 11.40 last 200m but did have 53kg. His time was just .4 off said G2/ WFA winner off a very similar 1st-600m split.
