David Gately heads to Caulfield expecting another testing winter meeting, with cold conditions likely to keep the track in the Soft range despite little rain forecast.

The rail moves to 3m after the previous meeting was run on a Heavy surface where runners charged down the outside throughout the day.

With little drying weather leading in, Gately expects horses finishing strongly away from the inside to again hold a significant advantage.

Race 8 – #7 Big Swinger

Big Swinger has done little wrong this preparation and looks ideally placed to continue his consistent campaign.

He resumed with a strong effort despite racing on inferior ground before producing an impressive victory at Flemington. Last start he again worked home strongly after settling well back in a race that favoured swoopers, confirming his form remains excellent.

This assignment doesn't appear as deep as his recent starts and with another race likely to suit his closing pattern, Gately believes he's the horse to beat.

Race 7 – #2 Brave Miss

Brave Miss appeals as one of the better value plays on the Caulfield program.

She was narrowly beaten in the Centaurea Stakes before being given a month between runs leading into Flemington, where she was forced to work early from a wide draw and paid the price late.

The drop back into Benchmark 78 company is a significant class relief and the apprentice claim further enhances her chances.

If she can settle more comfortably and produce the finish she's shown previously, Gately believes she's capable of causing an upset at attractive odds.
