Caulfield Tips and best bets 22/9/23

Underwood Stakes Day always signals Spring racing is underway and this year's card shapes as a cracker.

With fine weather predicted in Melbourne, expect the track to be a Good 4 with the running rail out 6m the entire circuit.

This will see the track play even, with slight disadvantages to horses who settle towards the rear of the field drawn inside (1-3) or outside (8+) barriers.

 

 

Caulfield Race 5 #15 Poifect $5.00

There's serious potential in this 3YO Pierro filly, who returns from a spell here.

She had just the one run in her first preparation which resulted in a maiden victory at Geelong in style.

She was then tipped out for a spell and looks to have come back in good order, with two soft jump outs resulting in a fourth and a win in her most recent.

The filly can handle the step up from maiden grade to Listed level and she gets a weight advantage accordingly.

The Hayes boys are in flying form with 25 winners from their last 100 runners and top jockey Mark Zahra gets aboard for the ride.

The race lacks pace, so Zahra can get her across from barrier 11 to land in a prominent position.

If she gets the gun run, she will be a big chance of being right in the finish here.

 

Caulfield Race 7 #2 Veight $4.00

This looks a race in two between favourite ‘Steparty’ and this 3YO Colt by Grunt.

I'm leaning towards the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained runner at the better value.

He was superb first-up when winning the Group 3 McNeil Stakes at this track over the 1200m, despite being underdone.

He'll only improve on that outing and is drawn to get the perfect run in the race from barrier 2, with Ben Melham aboard.

He won the VRC Sires second-up at this distance last preparation and I expect him to produce another Group 2 victory over the 1400m here.
