Clear skies and windy weather will see the Canterbury surface continue to improve for midweek racing.

By the time they jump we should land on at least a Soft 5 surface, with punters likely to gravitate towards those with on-speed profiles.

However, it is worth noting that the earlier rain can forge an off-speed pattern.

Canterbury's last meeting was held a fortnight ago when the rail was out 3m for the entire circuit.

On that occasion, most of the winners came from either just off the pace or much further back.

It should be no different this Wednesday with a 6m rail in use.

Punters should see runners "creeping out" off the rail and those off speed to have the keys to the card.

My expectations are that the eventual "tracking" positions from the 400m mark to the winning post will be on reasonably "used" ground.

This will force riders to shift their mounts even wider in the straight as the meeting unfolds.

For that reason, an underrated and tough country mare can give an enormous sight at big odds in a BM72 Hcp over 1250m.

Neil Evans has turned $100 into $3,180.

Race 6 #2 Ten Bells $10.00

Ten Bells is a 5YO daughter of Nicconi and around the $10.00 mark in early betting.

She is well placed from well off the speed, up in trip and crucially down in grade.

First up from a seven-month spell she contested a deeper Saturday BM78 for fillies and mares over 1100m.

She worked home really well from the back to be beaten only three lengths.

She now slips back to midweek company and is better suited by the wide draw.

Being drawn out means she can slide back in the field and find a trail from the half mile.

Ten Bells will carry 1kg less here after the 3kg claim for Amy McLucas and she is already a proven second-up winner.

Punters should watch for her to be charging home late.
