Lay Betting Tips: Who to avoid on the punt 8/8/26

This week we have identified two warm favourites that both come up as excellent risks and appear poor value at their current prices.
At Randwick, the Chris Waller stable appears to have revealed its hand with James McDonald opting for another runner, leaving the market favourite looking vulnerable first up against fitter opposition.
Later at Caulfield, the popular Blake Shinn and Lucy Yeomans combination is likely to attract plenty of emotional support from punters, with that factor alone keeping the price artificially short.
Lays of the Day - Saturday Racing 8/8/26
Randwick Race 7 #6 Matusalem $1.90
Happy to oppose the favourite here, who looks a run short from a fitness perspective and may have bigger targets later in the preparation.
The biggest lead comes from within the stable itself, with James McDonald electing to ride Tazima rather than the favourite. That suggests the stable's first choice may be the fitter and more forward horse.
J Mac is unlikely to waste that advantage and should be able to settle in a more prominent position, leaving Matusalem with a tougher task.
First up against race fit opposition is never an ideal setup, particularly at the current quote where the market appears to have overlooked the fitness query.
I expect the professional betting teams to be against him late and would not be surprised to see a noticeable market drift approaching start time.
Caulfield Race 9 #8 Changing Colours $2.40
The Blake Shinn and Lucy Yeomans combination is certain to attract plenty of support, however I believe the market has overplayed that factor.
Bookmakers are likely to keep the price artificially short due to the expected recreational money, creating little value at the current quote.
Barrier two also presents a significant challenge around the tight Caulfield Heath circuit. If Blake cannot hold a forward position early, there is every chance he finds himself buried along the rail with limited opportunities to build momentum.
Clean air is likely to be at a premium turning for home and horses settling closer to the speed should hold a distinct tactical advantage.
With the race shape against her and the price already compressed, she looks an excellent risk.
