Hype Horses Hurting

This week we have identified two popular runners in betting that both appear to be classic hype horses, with the market placing far too much emphasis on recent performances that may not be as strong as they first appear.

At Flemington, a Team Hayes juvenile has been heavily backed following consecutive placings behind a boom youngster, however the overall strength of that form line remains open to question.

Later at Rosehill, a lightly raced colt has already been spoken about as a future stallion after a modest debut victory, with the media and market appearing to have got well ahead of themselves.

Saturday Lays of the Day 4/7/26

Flemington Race 1 #4 Stars Of Dom $2.00

Appears severely over bet following two eye catching second placings at Sandown, where the market has become infatuated with the Mbube form line.

Whilst those performances were solid, I believe the race has been significantly over rated.

The overall time was only moderate and there are still genuine question marks surrounding the strength of the form.

She also takes her first look down the Flemington straight which is always a significant challenge for a young two year old.

Plenty of talented juveniles have struggled to adapt to the unique conditions at their first attempt.

This is a deeper race with quality opposition and at the current poison price there is simply no value left.

The hype has taken over and she comes up an excellent risk.

Avoid.

Rosehill Race 3 #1 Omolong $2.40

Has to be one of the biggest hype horses in Sydney this Winter following a modest debut win at Warwick Farm.

The race itself was run in only average time and I would not be surprised if the form struggles to stand up over the coming weeks.

Commercially there is every incentive for the stable and ownership group to build the profile of a promising young colt, and the media has certainly helped fuel that narrative.

The reality is he still has plenty to prove.

This is a much tougher assignment and the current quote appears heavily influenced by hype rather than substance.

I expect the professional betting teams to oppose him late, with a market drift looking highly likely as liquidity builds towards start time.

Lay.
