A quality field of 8 line up for the Group One Canterbury Stakes over the Randwick 1300m.
Group One winning gallopers Trapeze Artist, Kementari, Shoals and Prompt Response are all well suited under the weight-for-age conditions.
Pierata is chasing that elusive Group One victory and looks the horse with the most upside here.
Royal Randwick Track Traits
The Randwick track is currently rated a Good 4, with the rail in the true position the entire circuit.
There is 2-6mm of rain forecast for Saturday and the best ground will likely be 3-4 lanes off the rail.
Racing Market Movers
There has been a nibble for Shoals, who has been $8 into $7.50.
Trapeze Artist has also been supported, into $2.90 from $3.00 openers.
The Team Hawkes trained Brutal is on the drift, out to $8.00 from $7.00.
Key Runners
#1 Trapeze Artist $3.00> $2.90
A multiple Group One winner, who put in a monumental effort on Heavy in the Everest race last year, but no doubt saves his best performances for dry ground.
His first-up run was solid enough and off the back of two nice trials, he'll be raring to go second-up.
He's the class horse in the race and if he peaks on a Good track, he wins.
The query is the rain forecast and on that alone, he looks too short at the $2.90 quote.
#2 Pierata $4.20
A rising star of Australian turf who was set a suprising schedule last preparation, when connections opted to avoid a shot at The Everest.
Oddly enough, the stable declared that they had middle distance races in mind.
He then turned up in the Group Three Sydney Stakes on Everest day and destroyed them, running 1.21 seconds faster than Redzel over the same distance.
His first-up record is strong, as is his record on wet tracks.
The son of Pierro ticks more boxes than Trapeze Artist and must go on top.
#3 Kementari $4.50
A group one winner who is set to peak second-up.
He didn't run to expectation first-up, but has since run well in a recent trial.
Drawn barrier three, the son of Lonhro looks likely to sit last on the rails and will need plenty of luck from there.
His last win was at this corresponding meeting last year and he's since proven hard to catch for punters.
Looks well under the odds at the $4.50 quote.
#5 Shoals $8.00> $7.50
A three-time Group One winning mare who pulled up lame from The Everest last prep, but was flying prior to that run.
Her first-up record of three wins and a place from five starts suggests she'll be ready to rumble.
Unfortunately for connections, she is better suited on a dry track which is a 50/50 proposition at best.
Happy to follow market support if the track is in the Good range.
#8 Brutal $7.00> $8.00
Looks well out of his depth stepping up to a Group One and has to carry an extra 3kg here off his last start third.
That run came in the Group Three Southern Cross Stakes, where he was caught wide throughout and battelled well to the line.
However, this is a huge rise in class and the form from that race is well and truly questionable.
An absolute throw at the stumps from Team Hawkes. A top three finish would shock!
