Early oil for The Valley

Racing returns to The Valley this Saturday, as big competitive fields fill-up the nine race card and Spring time racing begins to fill the Melbourne air .

As of Thursday, the track is rated a Soft 6 although there is a section down the side that is rated a Good 4. With rain expected on Saturday however, expect participants to be met with a wet racing surface.

The rail is out 3m for the entire circuit and at this set-up, you should be looking for horses who settle on-speed and can handle soft going.

Moonee Valley Race 1 #4 Direct $6.00

I have amazing respect for the favourite here in Jigsaw, but I can't work out how these two are so far apart in the market. The $6.00 on offer for Direct is simply too good to look past.

He returns from a spell here and although there's no public vision of any of his lead in work, he'll be forward enough to be competitive over the 1000m.

He ran at this track and distance on debut back in November last year, and was forced to chase a super hot tempo before eventually running second behind subsequent Group 3 winner Paulele, with a big gap back to third.

The two runs last prep in Group 2 level were very pleasing. He put himself on-speed in a winning position on each occasion, and was tough behind Home Affairs and Anamoe.

He looks to get the perfect map here which will allow him to push forward and lead on the fence to control the tempo and hold out Jigsaw.

He is clearly a group-level horse and if they swing the turn together, he will be very tough to get past.

In my market he is a $4.40 chance, so I'm keen to take the prices on offer as stated.

The Valley Race 3 Tip #3 No Effort $3.90

I'm confident that No Effort can make it three on the bounce here in a very suitable assignment over the mile.

Two wins leading into this run have been very good in equal grade, parking up on-speed and dominating from there at Sandown and Caulfield respectively.

The drop back to a mile for this clash won't be an issue, and she is a mare in form who is now rock hard fit sixth-up into the prep.

She profiles as a very good Valley horse and from the low draw here, expect her to bounce quick and land straight up on the bunny.

If Falls wants to go quick and lead, jockey Carleen Hefel has the option of taking a sit second off the fence, which is an equally ideal position.

She drops 1kg off the last start win, and looks exceptionally placed and weighted given her winning record in these handicap races.

The mare placed two from three here at The Valley, whilst Hefel is riding in good form.

She is $2.50 favourite in my market, followed by Hi Stranger ($3.35) and Falls ($5.30). No Effort is the one to beat.
