Best bets at Rosehill

 Steve Hart

Rosehill Gardens plays host to a nine-race card, with the feature race of the day the Listed Civic Stakes.

The track is currently rated a Heavy 9 and the rail is situated in the true position for the entire circuit.

With fine weather forecast for the remainder of the week, a track upgrade is on the cards.

Look for a drying track to play fair, affording all runners their chance.

Rosehill Race 1 Tip #1 Mr Wong $4.60

This gelding by Mossman was desperately unlucky at his last start when running 0.2-lengths second in a class three highway at Royal Randwick.

After settling near last over the sprint trip of 1100m, he was forced to race on the inferior inside ground late and fell agonisingly short.

The step up to 1400m here looks ideal having proven himself over the distance last preparation.

From barrier 11, expect regular jockey Aaron Bullock to sit mid-field with cover before peeling wide and flying over the top late.

The wide draw suits this big striding gelding, as does the soft track and drop in class.

I expect this galloper to go onto bigger and better things, with The Kosciusko sure to be a target for connections.

Rosehill Race 2 Tip #14 White Boots $4.40

This ultra-consistent runner from the Kim Waugh stable lines up for his eighth run in this campaign.

He comes into this race with a clear fitness edge on his main rivals, who are stepping out to the 2000m for the first time this preparation.

His last start second behind So You Win was full of merit. In that run, he was exposed at the top of the straight and had a big job ahead of him after the early leader compounded at the 300m.

The margin of defeat was 1 length and it looked as though he ran through the line just as well, if not better than the short-priced favourite.

The gelding meets So You Win again here and after the claim for Robbie Dolan, White Boots has a 2kg weight swing in his favour.

With little speed engaged, expect him to get an easy time of it in the lead and prove tough to run down.

Rosehill Race 4 Tip #10 Waking Moment $16.00 each-way

On face value, you'd have to be a forgiving type to back this mare.

She's won only 1 from 19 and that victory came as a three-year-old in the Group Three Adrian Knox.

She's since seen her fair share of the country side, having left the John Thompson yard for the Darren Weir stable and finally settling with Australia's number one trainer, Chris Waller.

Her first run under Waller was encouraging. She made up significant ground over 1500m at Rosehill and all signs indicated that she'll relish the extra distance.

She's proven on a heavy track, will strip fitter second-up and gets the 2kg claim for gun apprentice Robbie Dolan.

A repeat of her last start run has her right in this and at the $16, she's a good each way play.
