Caulfield plays host to a nice winter Saturday program this weekend, with nine races set for decision over the course of the afternoon.

The track is currently rated a Soft 6 and despite sunny weather on the cards, the low temperatures should ensure it stays in the soft range.

The rail is out 12m the entire circuit and at this set-up, I expect horses up on the speed to hold the key. Given it's been four weeks since the last meeting here, wide lanes in the straight could prove better going later in the day.

Caulfield Race 2 Tip #2 Kaplumpich $5.50

You talk about horses that deserve a win, and Kaplumpich fits that bill perfectly.

He's been racing extremely well this prep, but has been unable to break through for a win.

The gelding's run last start at The Valley was very gutsy. He was forced to sit on-speed and wide without cover throughout the run, which told in the final 100m as he started to weaken.

Sticking to the mile here and returning to a more open track like Caulfield will definitely play into his favour.

From barrier 8, I expect him to sit midfield or closer with cover and unleash a run in the right part of the straight.

He has won at the mile previously and his form behind Heptagon, Holbein and Viral reads very well for this race of questionable quality.

I think his current quote of $5.50 is overs and hopefully Saturday is the day for Kaplumpich.

Caulfield Race 5 Tip #3 Merited $3.75

Comes here on the quick back-up after running in the Listed Creswick Stakes last Saturday at Flemington.

Her performance in that race was very good, and against market expectations she finished third behind $41 pop Front Page.

She jumped from the inside barrier which was the inferior ground on the day, and sat on-speed as she punched the breeze without cover.

Considering the challenges she faced in that hit-out, the way she stuck on was encouraging and proved her ability to run out a strong 1200m.

The filly sticks to that distance for this clash and I expect her to be ridden positively from the wide barrier to take a position outside the leader.

She is very well weighted in this handicap event, as she holds similar weight from her last start run which was in harder company.

The quick back-up tells me she's pulled up well and the stable are confident in her chances.
