Flemington plays host to a quality winter program on Saturday, with healthy field sizes and competitive betting markets over all the nine races.

The feature event of the day comes in race 6, the Listed Hilton Nicholas Straight Six over 1200m.

The track is currently rated a Heavy 9 and further rain is expected in the lead-up to Saturday.

It should be noted that Flemington has excellent drainage, however that can only do so much.

The rail is out 5m the entire circuit and at this set-up, I expect the better going to be out wide especially towards the outside fence in the straight races.

Flemington Race 3 Tip #1 Barbie's Fox $16.00

In what looks one of the more competitive races on the card, the price about Barbie's Fox is worth an each way bet.

She comes here off a dominant fresh win at Caulfield over the 1200m. On that occasion, she put them away with ease in the heavy conditions and has clearly returned in very good order.

She does map a touch awkward for this assignment from barrier 11, and rises 2.5kg from her last start. I suspect that's why we are getting the big price here.

However, she strips fitter off the highly rated last start effort and is well suited by the rise in distance second-up.

Her only previous second-up attempt resulted in a nice win and she clearly has a liking for rain-affected ground.

She's no sure thing, but she does look overs and I'm happy to have a bet on an each-way basis.

Flemington Race 4 Tip #12 Alfa Oro $2.20

There is a very good reason that this Laurie trained gelding has come up a short-priced favourite, and it's because his two wins this prep have been nothing short of dominant.

Those wins may not look that special on paper. However, on both occasions he led them on a merry dance before winning under his own steam and giving nothing else a look in.

He now gets a chance to test his ability in metro grade, and strikes a very winnable BM78 in town which lacks depth.

Back to 1100m should be no issue, and he has run second in heavy going before which suggests he will get through it.

He's mapped to sit up on speed and towards the outside fence, which I expect to be the best part of the track.

Well weighted and hard to beat, this galloper looks the best bet of the day at HQ.
