Early oil for Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Day

Caulfield plays host to the third Group One of the Victorian Spring racing season, with the 71st running of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m featuring a crack field.

The track is currently rated a Good 4, however there are scattered showers expected for Friday and raceday, so we maybe be edging into the soft range.

The rail is out 6m the entire circuit and at this set-up, expect horses who settle midfield and above to hold the advantage.

It looks set to be a hard day to swoop.

Caulfield Race 6 #3 Annavisto $2.60

On a day where there are a number of races that look extremely wide open, I think we find the only deservedly short favourite of the day here in Annavisto.

The talented 4YO mare comes into this second-up, off a very gallant effort behind Turaath over this track and distance when resuming.

She spotted that winner a few lengths in running and did extremely well to finish within half a length, in a race that rated very highly for the program.

Turaath has since won the Group 2 Let's Elope very impressively, which really franks the form for Annavisto here in the same BM90 grade.

She drops 0.5kg for her troubles, will be fitter and improved now second-up and looks to land a dream run up on speed from barrier 5.

With the track expecting to play favours to on-pace runners, she gains a huge advantage over key rivals in Snickerdoodledandy and Ecumenical, who will spot her lengths in running.

Her nearest map and market rival, Aidensfield, looks to be going only fairly at the moment and there's no other runners in the field that pose a genuine danger.

She is proven at this track and distance and should've bolted in last prep at this stage second-up, when she had no luck behind Cumberbatch.

This looks her race without a doubt, and I have her priced as a $2.45 favourite.

Caulfield Race 8 Tip #5 Beau Rossa $4.80

The big one of the afternoon, and another outstanding field of top line horses has assembled.

Some class horses have won this race in the past, including Santa Ana Lane, Rebel Dane, Exceed And Excel, and last year it was Behemoth who is back to defend his crown.

I'm siding with Beau Rossa, who should've beaten Behemoth in the G1 Memsie Stakes at this track and trip two weeks ago.

He got a suck run in behind the leader, but was just held up at a vital stage in the straight.

Once clear, he flashed home and was beaten a head in a great, but very unlucky, run.

He has drawn barrier one again for this clash, which means he looks to get the exact same run as he did last time out.

I'm hoping that lightning doesn't strike the same spot twice. He just needs that ounce of luck at the top of the straight to get clear running.

Will Clarken has this horse in outstanding order, plus Linda Meech looks as though she hasn't missed a beat since returning to the saddle.

I have Beau Rossa marked as a $3.90 favourite, with Probabeel at $5.15 and Behemoth at $8.00.

If the market stays as it is, I'll be backing Beau Rossa and having a save on Probabeel.
