Punters are active early at both key venues this week, with a number of intriguing mid-week betting moves.
At Flemington, a Damien Oliver ride for Godolphin has not been missed with early shoppers keen to be with the champion jockey, who has found good recent form.
Meanwhile in Sydney, an emerging stayer for the John Sargent yard creates plenty of interest at Randwick.
Flemington Tips
Schabau
Has a touch of class and was high up in Melbourne Cup markets last year.
He did enough here first-up here over an unsuitable 2000m, where he finished 8 of 13 when only 2.35 lengths off the winner.
Now out to his more preferred 2530m, expect him to improve sharply.
Stalking
Damien Oliver is back in form after a very lean run, and he’ll be looking to continue his winning ways on this filly.
Oliver is clearly the retained rider for Godolphin in Melbourne now, and this brings a pressure to repay the faith.
This filly has been racing well and recent form suggests she will be one of the strongest late.
Zesty Belle
Loves the Flemington straight (3:1-0-1) and has the key booking of Damien Lane which shows good intent.
She draws the right side of the track in gate 19, where in recent times the stand side has been the preferred going and perceived better ground for straight racing.
Look for her to sit just in behind the speed, before presenting late to charge home over the top.
Kalakarni Royale
Is another runner drawn to advantage in gate 14 for straight racing at Flemington.
She loves to get back and stalk a white-hot speed, and you can expect her to receive those favours here with a fast tempo predicted.
Just needs a touch of luck to weave through late and claim them all.
Randwick Tips
Black Bolt
Arrives here third-up and should be rock hard fit now, following the lead in runs.
This could have been the target race all along and the drop back to 1400m smells of a change of tactics to go forward on this occasion.
Expect them to be racing in the first four and be in an ideal striking position upon entering the straight.
Pecuniary Interest
Is from the shrewd John Sargent yard who have a tendancy to place them to perfection and give their big betting owners an opportunity to cash in.
His last start win at Kembla Grange was an eye opener and quashes any suggestion that the move in betting is just owner optimism.
I expect him to go right on with it here in metro grade and he could be something above average over these longer trips.
Sky Command
The owners love a bet and with the horse flying, appear to have chimed in here again at the early price.
She has been dominant winning both career starts and although this is a much tougher field, expect her to be the key player still.
Look for Brenton Avdulla to bounce straight to the front, before looking to kick hard at the 200m mark.
Hulk
Has the gun Waller/Tommy Berry combination, who will both be looking to build wins early in the season.
He looks to have a fitness edge on most of these following plenty of recent racing and could take a more forward position than most expect.
Tommy will be keen to strip some of the Waller business away from J Mac this season, and will be highly motivated here.
